Guest guest
Dear Rita; As this article describes: http://www.living-better.com/learn_2.jsp the asacol tablets are designed to dissolve in the colon. But " a small percentage of people (2% to 3%) have reported passage in the stool of what appears to be whole tablets, fragments of tablets, or tablet shells. If this occurs repeatedly, contact your doctor. " So you are doing the right thing to call his doctor. Best regards, Dave (father of (21); PSC 07/03; UC 08/03)

Definitely needs to be checked out with your dr., but it's generally nothing to worry about. Regards, Carolyn B. in SC

Guest guest
Thanks for all the replies. i got a response from his GI who said that sometimes they have seen that asacol passes out in the feces, but have evn seen it in colonoscopies and that it is just the shell of the asacola and that the medicine diffuses out. From what wrote (will read the paper), it is not only shells, but capsule fragments, whole tabs, etc. If i can get my son to let me check his poop (he's 19), perhaps I may be able to know better what condition he's are in. I strongly believe he generally has a malabsorption problem. His weight and height has been stagnant forever. He eats well but although his colitis seems to be under control and also the PSC is not causing any problems now, he often tells me that when he uses the restroom, his poop is usually an awful lot. It is one thing he constantly talks about, the quantity of it. Oh,all the small and big things of PSC and UC. Often I, and I am sure, others, are not sure what to ignore and what to worry about. Guest guest
I have the same problem. Every time I have a little itch I think to myself "here it comes", every time I fall asleep on the couch, have lighter colored stool than usual, feel discomfort in the stomic area I think the same. In short, every little pain, ache or discomfort gives me this uneasy feeling that PSC is acting up. I never know what to tell my doc and what to ignore. Fortunately he doesn't mind me writing e-mails with perceived symptoms. -----Original Message-----From: [mailto: ]On Behalf Of RitaSent: Monday, October 23, 2006 5:05 PMTo: Subject: Re: Undigested asacol Thanks for all the replies. i got a response from his GI who said that sometimes they have seen that asacol passes out in the feces, but have evn seen it in colonoscopies and that it is just the shell of the asacola and that the medicine diffuses out. Guest guest
I have the same problem. Sometimes I see the Asacol in the feces and sometimes I don't. I asked my GI doctor about it and she said that it was probably just the shell of the Asacol (I guess the content of it got out through a crack or something) and not to worry about it. This has been going on for about 5 years now and there don't seem to be a problem. I have a colonoscopy done every year and it has always looked just fine so obviously I'm getting enough medication. He informed the doctor at his last visit in Sept (not his regualr GI) and was told he could take it 3 caps 2x/day and that is what he is doing now. My son doesn't remember when that started and I believe it is not with every bathroom visit. He normally averages one-two visits a day but usually when he has to goa second time, it is loose. I have just sent an email to his doctor to ask why he is losing asacol in the feces but would appreciate if anyone has any ideas or views on this.Thanks.Rita (Florida) Access over 1 million songs - Yahoo! Guest guest
I also had this happen to me before I had an allergic reaction to Asacol; however they were not just the shells. I know this sounds gross but make sure your son really looks at them, poke at them if you have to. The shells were cracked but there was still medication in them. I told my GI about this and that's when he decided I had spastic colon as well. Just make sure to cover your bases because there are other things that he could take with the same active ingredients. Good luck... > My son just informed me today that sometimes when he uses the > restroom, he ses that there is a whole caplet of asacol in the feces, > ie undigested. he used to be on 2 caps 3x/day but the afternoon dose > was problem, sometimes taken as late as 8-9 pm since he doesn't carry > it to school.
