Guest guest
I'm 5'5 " and NOW I weigh 126. I lost 11 lbs. the first week, so not quite the 10-15% you mentioned. I didn't eat much of anything at all the first 3-4 days - just broth, slim fast & juice thru a syringe, then moved up to soup and thin shakes. I also was looking forward to losing a few pounds, but I probably gained a few in the weeks before surgery because I ate anything I wanted, knowing I was going to lose. I stopped losing weight about a week after, even though I wasn't eating much, because I think I wasn't getting enough calories. I'm still not eating much and am holding steady. It's really hard to eat healthy when everything is soft - too many shakes, slim fast, yogurts, etc. I am able to eat scrambled eggs, so at least now I can get some protein, but when your diet consists of 90% carbs, it's hard to lose. It wasn't my ideal diet plan either, but I look at it as an added bonus. So, I guess to answer your question, you should probably expect to lose about 10-12 lbs. If that's leaving you too skinny, go ahead and enjoy your food until then, gain a few lbs. I had fried chicken for the first time in years the week before surgery and it was SO good! Guest guest
I had surgery 5/27. I'm 5'2 " and my weight on my surgery date was 132. I lost 5 pounds the first week (so to 127), and gained back to 130-131 pretty quickly. I was allowed to start eating very soft foods (scrambled eggs, tofu) at 10 days, but you should ask your surgeon what his guidelines are. Now, I don't know if you'll be banded or wired--I was not wired, just banded, which meant that every time I ate I had to take out the bands and the splint, drink my food, brush teeth, brush splint, and put bands & splint back in again. I found this whole process to be so annoying I went for bigger meals 3-4 times a day instead of small meals 5-6 times a day. On the bright side, I was about to eat anything right from the start as long as I blended it. The body needs lots of extra protein to recover from surgery, and if it doesn't get it from your diet it'll take it from your muscles. That means that the weight loss post-surery is all water & lean mass- -exactly the opposite of what you want. So I prepared by stocking up on protein shakes (Genisoy chocolate is the best in my opinion) and protein powder (Genisoy makes a good flavorless one), so I had a really easy time getting lots of protein. That helped me not lose much muscle weight. I was intrepid about blending anything I wanted to eat (for example, salad works blends well if you add dressing and a little carrot juice), and I didn't care what the heck it looked like. We even had a barbecue a week after the surgery and I wasn't shy at all about taking my burger into the kitchen and blending it. (Hey, quit giving me the hairy eyeball--If everyone else is having a nice burger I darn well wanted one too! I just called it pate. And my green salad was... an exotic variety of gazpacho! Yeah, that's the ticket!) I never realized about how important texture is when it comes to enjoying food until I had to eat stuff without it. It's true that some foods are a little less enjoyable after they go through the blender, but it's nice to be able to get the taste, at least! Hope that helps, Rhonda PS myhealthpro.com is one of the cheapest places I have found for bulk-ordering the Genisoy shake mixes.
