Guest guest
Hi J, I wish I could encourage you that your energy levels will spring right back, but that is not normally the case. Two things you can possible do though to possibly help. First, have your Neph heck to see if you are anemic, which is a possibility at your level of kidney function. If you are, Epogen can dramatically help. Second is that even though it is very hard, exercise does help to boost energy levels. You really should get a clearance from your doctor before you begin a new exercise program if you have not been exercising, but it can help. As to the shortness of breath, unless you are severely anemic and therefore short on oxygen, I do not know of what that could be from. That is not a normal symptom on IgAN, but please do consult your doctor about it. Do you know how long you will be on Prednisone? Hopefully that will help to get your protein levels down. Take care,

Guest guest
Hi J Do you happen to know what your hemoglobin is? It might not have dropped enough by now to be treated (anemia), but enough for you to feel it. Search for anemia on www.igan.ca . There's a google search box near the bottom of the greeting page. If you check the right radio button on the right below the box, it will search just on www.igan.ca In my experience, some of the blood pressure meds can make you feel short of breath sometimes. What are you taking? Pierre Shortness of Breath and Fatigue > Hi all. Guest guest
I'm not sure what my hemoglobin is. The last number I remember was 11.2, but that was right after I got out of the hospital. As for bp meds, I'm on Norvas, Topral and Lasix.

Guest guest
Hi , I would consult your doctor about the shortness of breath...but I can tell you my experience when on the 80mg daily dose of prednisone. I was fatigued quite frequently and did have problems with shortness of breath on climbing stairs and walking in stores to shop. I found that trying to exercise 30 min a few times a week helped though admittedly the fatigue normally would keep me from it. As the prednisone dose dropped many of the side effects quickly went away. I didn't realize just how horrid the stuff was making me feel until my dose would be lowered and I would start to feel better. On the up side my neph said in his experience many people (though not all) who have lots of side effects normally have a good response to the pred as far as the kidneys are concerned. Those who show minimal or no side effects normally have no response to the pred as far as their kidneys are concerned. If there is one thing I have taken away from these past 10 months is a deep respect for prednisone and what it can do to the body. Amy Shortness of Breath and Fatigue Hi all. I have been one of the " lurkers " on this board and very much appreciate everything I've learned about IgAN since my diagnosis in May 2004. One thing I keep wondering about is if and when my energy level will come back or if I will continue to be short of breath. I'm currently on 3 bp meds, but my bp still isn't the best (140/100). My neph doesn't want to change me to an ACE until I finish the high doses of prednisone (80mg/day). As for the shortness of breath, all I have to do is walk across a room and I'm out of breath. My numbers at my last neph visit had improved with creatnine at 2.6, but my protein had gone up (I think it was of 4). As I'm still learning about IgAN, I'm not sure if this cooresponds to anything or not. Any insight on what may be going on would really be appreciated. Thanks! Guest guest
Yes that fuzzy brain feeling is very much a side effect of the prednisone. It got so bad for me that I had to stop designing new doll outfits (I design and sew doll clothes for a living) due to becoming frustrated when I tried to sew them together. I had no problems with outfits I have sewn for years, anything new would take me almost a week to cut and sew...normally it takes about 4-5 hours for a new outfit. The best way I can explain it is you have all the information in your brain to complete the task at hand but your mind can't put all the pieces together in the correct order. You end up with the " on the tip of your tongue " feeling quite often and it can become very frustrating. Good news is once you come down to lower doses around 15-20mg daily your mental abilities come back to normal...or at least as normal as you were pre-prednisone ;o) As long as your numbers are improving then I found dealing with the side effects is worth it. Though when your going thru it things can become frustrating to the point of causing depression....try to keep the fact that this WILL come to an end in your head. (after all they can't keep you on high doses for very long due to other more severe side effects on the body) It's the one thing that kept me going on those high doses, reminding myself that the high dose was temporary. That and all the support from everyone here of course. Hang in there and feel free to ask away, no question too small, no question too silly. I kept a journal of side effects and when I noticed them begin and end along with my b/p journal...so it's easy for me to go back and say " Yep when I was on dose xyz things were like this... " Amy Shortness of Breath and Fatigue Hi all. I have been one of the " lurkers " on this board and very much appreciate everything I've learned about IgAN since my diagnosis in May 2004. Guest guest
--Hi, I am less fatigued since starting on aranesp which is similar to procrit. it is a subcutaneous injection tat keeps my hematocrit between 32 and 34. I am still sob , especially with exertion-but I have aortic insufficiency. my aortic valve doesn't close all the way due to a calcium deposit on it. probably from severe high blood pressure I had when I was diagnosed with IGAN. I don't know how much the anemia plays a roll or the valve does. My dr said an elevated BUN could cause fatigue also. thanks, chrisitine - In iga-nephropathy , " keyofa1 " <arjessup@b...> wrote: > Hi all.
