> *Microwave Mystery Raises Questions for Local Couple "

>

> TOTTENHAM, ONTARIO - Mysterious buzzing noises and flashing lights

coming from their microwave have caused local couple Jacquie & Marc

vonHunnius to question the safety of certain supermarket store brand

margarine.

>

> Last Friday night, Mrs vonHunnius, 31, decided to make popcorn.

She popped a bag of corn in her 3-year-old microwave, then after

taking it out began to heat up some IGA 'Smart Choice' margarine. " I

put the margarine in an old mixing cup, " she said. " The same mixing

cup I've heated things in for years. " As she stepped away from the

microwave, it began making loud buzzing noises and emitting sporadic

flashes of bright light, she said. She immediately stopped the

device, unplugged it from the wall, and put 'Do Not Use' signs on it.

>

> The next day, Mr vonHunnius, a 33-year-old millwright, used the

microwave to make eggs with no adverse effects. The couple decided

there *must* have been some sort of metal in the microwave that Mrs

vonHunnius did not notice.

>

> On Monday evening after work, Mr vonHunnius made some more popcorn,

then began to heat up margarine in the microwave, this time using an

earthenware bowl. " Just like I always do, " he said, shaking his

head. Moments later, the microwave began buzzing loudly and spitting

out flashes of white hot light.

>

> The couple is mystified. Mrs vonHunnius stated the only thing they

can think of: " If it's not the containers, and there are no

mysterious bits of metal around that only appear when making popcorn,

then WHAT THE HELL IS IN THAT MARGARINE? "

>

> Mr and Mrs vonHunnius state that they will never buy that brand of

margarine again, but are undecided as to whether they will pursue the

matter with the grocery chain.

i would be a bit leery that's for sure. as far as going to the store with a

complaint - you may be wasting your time - they are likely to give you a free

tub of margarine and make fun of you after you leave imho.

It's a store brand generic. So it could be ANYTHING repackaged in generic

labelling. I got it at IGA, which is owned by Sobey's and is part of the

chain that includes Price Chopper. The store brand is called " Smart Choice "

and it's canola margarine.

Strange tale, Jacquie.

This sounds as likely as anything I can think of.

And do bother the manufacturer.
