Hello all,

I haven't posted often lately, been kinda busy. Two little ones

kinda keep me running! But, for those of you that may remember, both

of my boys are plagio boys, Jax being the older of the two at 2 1/2

and doing well. Eli has been wearing his STARband since Dec 28th. We

seen the neuro for a follow up and he said it looks like he'll need

another helmet... already?? I guess we didn't go through this with

Jax and his CranioCap, so I'm unsure how common this is with the

STARband. For the most part, it is working. He still has quite a bit

of facial issues -- the buldging, the fuller cheek, smaller eye and

definately his ears. I am all for banding again due to the extreme

route we had to go with Jax (surgery) and I absolutely will not even

think about doing that again. However, how common is this to have to

have another one made after only 2 months?

When we started this, the orthotist that is working with Eli said

he's only had to recast 2 kids -- and he's been there for several

years. So, that makes me wonder. Jax was a big boy, he grew pretty

quick, and was in his for 5 months, casted and received his helmet

at about the same exact age as Eli. Eli is a BIG boy, he'll be 7

months tomorrow and is now just over 26 pounds. His head is big, but

then again, so was Jaxsons.

Soooo, for those of you that have used the STARBand, did you have

this issue as well??

Thanks in advance,

Kim

Jaxson -- plagio (wore helmet 5 months), then at 17 months had

Craniotomy to correct severe plagio

Eli -- 7 months, tort not resolving after 3 months therapy, wearing

STARband #1 still, soon to be casted for #2

Kim,

It is true that a second Starband is rare but if he has grown out of

the first then I guess he would have to have a new one. Is he out of

adjustment room in the first band??? We used a Doc, but we moved to

band two when there was no room for adjustment left. Dom outgrew his

first band in 7 weeks, but usually they last longer in the Stars.

Kim, Sophie wore her STARband for 4 1/2 months and graduated at 13 months. Our orthotist told us that he would grind the heck out of it before recommending another one. Is Eli having a lot of red spots popping up to make you think that he is out growing his band. My orthotist told me that they rarely do a second band on a baby. Why would the NS say this? When Sophie graduated she still had some facial assymetry and a flat spot but we saw a lot of improvement and have seen in the last month post band improvement from growth. Eli's helmet is getting too small -- the back is going way up --

his head has grown 2 inches since he started the band, and the top

if it is higher than the ortho said it should be.

When we started all this, the neuro said it was possible he'd need

two, due to what happened with Jax.. but that was only if his tort

didn't resolve. But now that's not the reason, though it's not

resolved yet. He has constant red spots on his right side of his

head, where the sides come down like sideburns.

I just don't want to get a new one every couple of months. They

said he'd possibly be in it until he was a year... when he started

at 4.5 months. I don't see him being that severe, not like jax was.

Jax wore his about 5 months, but the CranioCap.

I don't know.. I just want it to work. UGH.

Kim, Wow two inches, that is awesome growth. Sophie's head only grew 1/2 an inch! Maybe he really does need a second helmet. Are you happy with his rounding? Did they use the StarScanner on Eli? I think that helps too with know where you are with improvement! Yeah, the neuro thinks two inces is too much, too -- they are

sending him for an MRI next month just to be sure. Not worried about

that though, been through so much with Jax, this is easy stuff. I am

happy that he's rounding, yes. There is still quite a big indent

behind his right ear, and his facial stuff needs some major work,

but he's rounding so I know that eventually will fall into place.

The ortho here doesn't like the scanner and chooses not to use it.

He does the casting, which is a bit worse. He said that they aren't

as accurate in HIS opinion, I would think otherwise but who am I

anyway.

Eli is a big boy, the rest of his body is massive, so his head

should be as well. I think if I threw a lil head on him he'd look

like one of those cartoons that have the huge bodies and tiny heads.

He's already struggling to fit in 18 months closes because they

won't go over his head, and if they do, they are hard to get over

his shoulders. Frustrating.
