Guest guest
Hello All. I've been searching thru existing posts for more info, etc. I'm still in the " deciding " phase (told just last week i need 12- 18 months of ortho and jaw surgery for open bite). My question pertains to time off of work. When i had my consult appt with my oral surgeon i asked how long would it take to get back to work. he said it depends on each person and how much talking you do during the day at your job but somewhere in 2-4 weeks. That's a huge range for me. I'm a receptionist and talking of course is necessary for work! I dont have any info yet on whether he would want to do bands or wire or anything like that. I have an MRI set for this week for him to review then another appt with him for surgery specifics and stuff next month. So how much time did you all need off work. I assume being wired shut would take longer healing time? that's an assumption. In what case do you need wiring (sounds more severe to me) as opposed to being banded? As always, thanks for any input. Guest guest
Hi , How much time you need off depends on what you end up having done. Mine was a pretty extreme case (17 mm lower advancement, 5 mm upper) so it was done in phases. My first surgery was lower only. I was banded tightly for about 6 weeks. I went back to work after only two weeks which was much too early but my employer didn't give me a choice. I was still in a lot of pain, was very weak and people could hardly understand me. I really needed at least 6 weeks. My second surgery was the upper jaw and was a little bit easier. I had it 2 days before Thanksgiving and was able to travel to my in-laws 400 miles away for Christmas. It still took at least a month to feel sort of back to normal again. You should take as much time off as you possibly can. For some reason, a lot of surgeons tend to underestimate how much time you need off work. Whether you're banded or wired depends on the surgeon. Despite the severity of my case, I was never wired. I was still on liquids only for about 3 months and was unable to move my jaw. I hope this helps. > Hello All.
