Carol:

Welcome!

It will take One batch with lye and your fears will fly out the window! take

laura's precautions and you'll do fine!

interesting you should mention clay, i've often wanted to sculpt soap. there

could be an untapped market waiting for you. God

works in mysterious ways.....

larrae

btw, we also had a petting zoo....(the neighbor's comments, lol) with: a

hamster, an iguana, an african grey, 3 tanks of tropicals

(including some beautiful blue discus), dogs (an adopted poodle, a rottie and a

chicken liver lover), and chickens .

I couldn't do the bunny thing though.......oh, i forgot the worms (which i have

to protect from the chickens!!!)

and the po lady calls this the house of fragrance (i think because she drops

(and breaks) my fo's on the porch!!!)

Hi Carol!

Just a quickie for ya....my advise to you would be to go outside to mix

your lye, that's what I do anyway and make sure to stand upwind. Before

I made soap for the first time I was scared to death of the lye...to

quote a dear friend " put on your Hazardous Waste Suit " LOL! It isn't as

scarey as you think (or at least " I " thought), but you really do need to

be careful and wear goggles (or glasses), long sleeves, long pants &

gloves for safety sake...oh yeah, and shoes, too.

I'd love to know how to do a sculpture...yeah, buddy, I could sculp my

DH's head & give it a good whack every now & then! LOL!

Hi Carol,

Welcome! I wanted to address your question about " log " moldsbecause they

actually work better than molded soaps for me. I use either a 12 inch PVC

pipe or 15 inch downspout pipe (each holds a 2# batch perfectly). I prefer

the downspouts only because they are insulated better and don't " bow " out

when they get hot.

Anyway, I cut them with a mitre box. I got one with extra high sides and

sawed the slit all the way to the bottom of the mitre box. I use a

pastry/dough scraper to slice through the soap. I also measured out in 1/2

inch increments from the sawed slit, so my bars are always uniform in size.

I usually wait about 1 week before cutting, depending on the hardness of the

soap. They cut best with a bit of curing.

HTH,
