It is hard to tell without knowing your diet. But, I would say there is not a connection between gluten-free and yeast infections. Before going gluten free, I had 2 or 3 of each a year, off and on for years and years. Has anyone else had this reaction? The damage to the villi effects enzyme production, including production of cellulase, which is needed to break down sugars and fiber. Cellulase deficiency can cause fungal overgrowth such as candida (yeast infection). Guest guest Posted January 6, 2006 Report Share Posted January 6, 2006 I have had several yeast infections and found that artificial sweetners, too much sugar, stress, soaps, and being sick all tend to leave me with one. I have cut all artificial sweetners out of my diet and have started using a body wash instead of soap and have cut most of them out. The sugar if I cut it down when I am stressed or sick then I can cut even more out. Also the other thing one doctor had me do was use the medications for 6 weeks to get rid of the infection totally. However, at the time i had no idea i was gluten intolerant and did not know what celiac was. I have not yet gotten a diagnosis, but have done the blood work. I'm pretty sure i have it, but always wondered where the yeast fit in. I KNEW that all of my health problems over the past two years were inter-related. My doctors treat the yeast as separate from the GI. But I know this isn't right. Well, now, after trying to eliminate gluten 100% I break out in horrible hives and burn and itch all over when i eat sugar. Do a lot of you eat gluten free and sugar free???? This seems so daunting. I can do one or the other, but everything you can buy gluten free is usually full of sugar, give or take a few things. Should i tolerate sugar better after cleansing myself of gluten???? You might have to do more of your own baking… J You can also concentrate on fruits and veggies and proteins and beans and safe grains, then add whatever sweetening doesn’t make you sick (honey, stevia, fructose, artificial). I’m not allergic to sugar except that it makes me break out in fat. I’m finding that much of the packaged gluten-free foods would put all of my hard-lost weight right back on me if I ate it!
