Guest guest
I don't have any experience with the teeth, but I can totally relate on the bottle thing. My older daughter refused to drink milk from a cup so I cut out milk during the day but still gave it to her from a bottle at night until she turned 2 (don't tell my pediatrician ) The ped said it's better for them to never drink milk than for them to drink it from a bottle, but I just couldn't accept the fact that my daughter wasn't drinking any milk. So finally when she turned 2 we stoped giving her the bottle at night. We started allowing her to have a TINY bit of ovaltine powder in her milk (in a sippy cup) and she calls it her milkshake--she drinks it up! As long as your son is getting lots of yogurt and cheese, I wouldn't worry about it. jiojuli22 <jiojuli22@...> wrote: hi everyone hope everyone is well... havent posted ina while... jakub is well and has been out of the band for 6 months now... walking and still not eating table foods at almost 14 months which has me down.. also i took him to the pediatric dentist today bc his top four teeth are dark in color ... greyish.brown.. i am so dissappointed in myself b c the dentist told me this is prob from him falling and hitting his gums and baby teeth soo much.. it bruised his gums and roots of his teeth... this will never go away and he will now have greyish dark teeth.. another issue to deal with.. as he grows up.. kids teasing him... i feel so guilty that i mayble could have iced his teeth when he fell.. or shouldve taken to the dentist then...but i thought it was just the busted lip that bled so much.. it was actually his gums... now his baby teeth are damaged... and will grow back like this... ... im also trying to wean him from the bottle and its not working... he drinks milk from the bottle every night before bed... hell drink juice from sip0py cup but not milk... i dont know what to do anymore.. any suggestions would be appreciated... frances..mom to jakub going on 14 months.. Guest guest
Hello Frances, Your email really touched me. As a fellow new mom, I really feel for you and what you are going through. You are obviously a fantastic mother who is very attentive to your child's needs. You did exactly what you thought was right at the time and did the best you could. That is all you can do. If it makes you feel any better, I would not have known about the possible damage to a child's teeth from bumping the gums. I would be in the same situation. I appreciate you sharing, as your story has potentially helped me. I do hope that you are not too hard on yourself. There are many things that can be done in the way of cosmetic dentistry should the need arise. My husband actually has a very dark front tooth that resulted from a fall in later childhood. Despite the tooth, I believe that he is very handsome and others have said so as well . I wish I could offer you more in the way of advice, but am still new to this mommy thing and am also working on solid foods and weaning. Please just know that you are not alone. Guest guest
Will he eat yogurt? Chunks/slices of cheese? You just need to make sure he gets the calcium. I mentioned to my ped SO many times that she wouldn't drink milk from a sippy cup and they just kept saying "then don't give her milk". For me, I HAD to do the bottle of milk at bedtime b/c that was the only way I could get her to sleep. But during the day she just drank water and ate her meals. I did a snack between each meal so I knew she was getting lots of nutrition. They never explained why it was so important that she didn't have a bottle anymore. I figured if it was for orthodontic reasons I didn't care b/c she'd probably end up with braces anyway! But I never heard the reason. frances vega <jiojuli22@...> wrote: I THOUGHT IF I STOPPED THE BOTTLE TOTALLY IN THE DAY HE WOULD STARVE... HE EATS BREAKFAST... Guest guest
Maybe it isn't time for him to wean yet? maybe there's something in the texture of milk he doesn't like with a cup. Are you using the kind of sippys that don't spill when they turn over? That type might be hard for him to get stuff out of -- but it also might mimic the feel of the milk in his mouth that a bottle gives. You might need to experiment a little, too -- our son had a preference over the types of cups he used.Good luck------- Original Message -------From : frances vega[mailto:jiojuli22@...]Sent : 2/16/2006 12:20:17 PMTo : Plagiocephaly Cc : Subject : RE: Re: help feeling down... nothing to do with bandI THOUGHT IF I STOPPED THE BOTTLE TOTALLY IN THE DAY HE WOULD STARVE... Guest guest
The reason is "baby bottle syndrome" in which the sugars of the milk, juice, other drinks, pool in the tooth area and cause cavities at the base of the teeth as they grow. I *knew* about this, and was pretty diligent (I thought) about not letting him fall asleep nursing, or use a bottle too much-- but my son ended up having several cavities between his teeth (he didn't get checked until he was 4) . I was competely shocked.------- Original Message -------From : Vespa[mailto:meg_vespa@...]Sent : 2/16/2006 12:43:08 PMTo : Plagiocephaly Cc : Subject : RE: Re: help feeling down... nothing to do with bandWill he eat yogurt? Chunks/slices of cheese? You just need to make sure he gets the calcium. I mentioned to my ped SO many times that she wouldn't drink milk from a sippy cup and they just kept saying ""then don't give her milk"". HE WONT DRINK MILK FROM THE SIPPY CUP... MAYBLE ONLY ONE OUNCE OF WATHER OR JUICE... WHAT SHOULD I GIVE HIM... IF HE DOESNT GET HIS MILK IT WILL BE HELL .. So finally when she turned 2 we stoped givin g her the bottle at night. We started allowing her to have a TINY bit of ovaltine powder in her milk (in a sippy cup) and she calls it her milkshake--she drinks it up! As long as your son is getting lots of yogurt and cheese, I wouldn't worry about it. jiojuli22 <jiojuli22@...> wrote: hi everyone hope everyone is well... havent posted ina while... jakub is well and has been out of the band for 6 months now... walking and still not eating table foods at almost 14 months which has me down.. also i took him to the pediatric dentist today bc his top four teeth are dark in color ... greyish.brown.. i am so dissappointed in myself b c the dentist told me this is prob from him falling and hitting his gums and baby teeth soo much.. it bruised his gums and roots of his teeth... this will never g o away and he will now have greyish dark teeth.. another issue to deal with.. as he grows up.. kids teasing him... i feel so guilty that i mayble could have iced his teeth when he fell.. or shouldve taken to the dentist then...but i thought it was just the busted lip that bled so much.. it was actually his gums... now his baby teeth are damaged... and will grow back like this... ... im also trying to wean him from the bottle and its not working... he drinks milk from the bottle every night before bed... hell drink juice from sip0py cup but not milk... i dont know what to do anymore.. any suggestions would be appreciated... frances..mom to jakub going on 14 months.. Guest guest
Frances- My name is Heidi, my son Braden is 4 months old. I am writing you based on children of friends of mine. I have a friend whose son fell and hit is teeth and one of them was a greyish color. Like you she was upset and heartbroken. However, once her son lost the baby tooth, the new tooth grew in perfectly white like the rest. I'm no dentist and I don't know the extent of damage your son has had but maybe his teeth will turn out fine. I just wanted to let you know that someone else out there had a similar experience and the outcome was fine. Don't beat yourself up! As for the bottle at his age...whatcha gonna do? A friend of mines daughter sucked a bottle of juice to go to sleep every night until she was 3-4 years old. It is what she liked and so they let her do it. They eventually pulled the, "your a big girl", trick on her to get her to stop. My sister has a 4 year old little girl who is quite capable of drinking from a normal cup but still to this day she drinks out of a sippy cup. Why you ask? Because it is what she likes. We just figure she will give it up when she is ready. I have another friend whose baby still sleeps in his crib at the age of 3. Everyone's kid develops a little slower than normal in some area. I understand you being concern and a bit bummed. Trust me, I worry about everything too. But just know that you son is just being himself and he might just be comfortable with the way things are. All kids are different and progress differently, he'll let go of the bottle and eat table foods soon enough. Keep you chin up! My son gets his STARband tomorrow so we are about to start down our own struggling road. My new rule is to keep a positive attitute! Good luck to you!
