Woo hoo! Your big entrance into the world of competitive eating - which is now considered a sport by some and is shown on ESPN! I catch DH watching it from time to time and it makes my stomach churn - and makes me laugh too. Especially when they interview them like serious athletes about their tactics.

Anyway - here is a link to a great article about celiac - the most informative one in plain English that I've seen in a very long time. At the end there is a section with "quick facts" about celiac. You can probably pull out some good stats to reel off from there. Quick and easy soundbites are the way to go - I always tell people that:

* 1 in 133 people have it

* 1 in 4 caucasians have the gene (lower frequency but still common in other ethnicities)

* and that 1/3 of people with IBS are thought to be undiagnosed celiacs.

That brings home how common it is.

Then I mention that it's not just bread, but anything with any ingredient derived from WBRO - I use Rice Krispies and malt flavoring and restaurant meats marinated in soy sauce as examples.

Alright ! Are you going to have to cook your own wings to make

sure they are gf? Or will they have the chef work with you?

In order to tryout, you must call the radio show and propose an

eating stunt. I did that this morning. I called in under the stage

name "Glutenless Pete" and explained what Celiac disease was, and

how I wanted to raise awareness during this contest that draws

20,000 people to Philadlephia's Wachovia Center. The

name "Glutenless Pete" is a take off of the Simpsons episode where

Homer sues an all you can eat restaurant for kicking him out. He's

awarded a job as the restaurant's mascot named "Bottomless Pete".

After asking me if I was "coming in to eat doughnuts" (jokingly)

host Angelo Cataldi said he "admired a man with a cause" and said

he'd like to have me come in. Co-host Al ti chimed in saying

that he had just read an article about Celiac the other day.

So, I'm headed in to the studio on Tuesday 1/10 at 6:30 AM to eat a

48 oz steak on the air.

If you are in the Philly area, listen at 610 AM on your radio. You

can also listen live, or check out the recap, after I'm done at,

The name "Glutenless Pete" is a take off of the Simpsons episode where Homer sues an all you can eat restaurant for kicking him out. He's awarded a job as the restaurant's mascot named "Bottomless Pete".After asking me if I was "coming in to eat doughnuts" (jokingly) host Angelo Cataldi said he "admired a man with a cause" and said he'd like to have me come in. Co-host Al ti chimed in saying that he had just read an article about Celiac the other day.So, I'm headed in to the studio on Tuesday 1/10 at 6:30 AM to eat a 48 oz steak on the air.If you are in the Philly area, listen at 610 AM on your radio. You can also listen live, or check out the recap, after I'm done at, http://www.610wip.comWish me luck!paulP.S. If you have any facts and figures about Celiac, you think I should mention on the air, please let me know. I have a few tidbits, but it never hurts to have more info.

Glutenless Pete

Hello Everybody,I wanted to let you know about a little undertaking of mine.I qualified this morning for a tryout in 610 WIP's Wing Bowl competition. The contest is a wing eating competition in Philadelphia held on 2/3/05. The contest is sponsored by Sports Radio WIP 610 AM. I am competing, first, because I love to eat, but second, to raise awareness for Celiac. In order to tryout, you must call the radio show and propose an eating stunt. I did that this morning. I called in under the stage name "Glutenless Pete" and explained what Celiac disease was, and how I wanted to raise awareness during this contest that draws 20,000 people to Philadlephia's Wachovia Center. Generally speaking, wings *should* be gluten-free. It's the sauces

which may or may not contain other stuff.

Buffalo wings are roasted, then served with sauce on the side. I

have no idea how the contest will do it, but if they use the

traditional Buffalo Wing recipe with the Texas Pete sauce, it's all GF.

Yup, 1 in 133 people in america have it, but 97% of those people

have yet to be diagnosed. I would also mention Dermatitis

Herpetiformis (DH) as a skin manifestion of celiac. and how many

doctors just label the rash eczema(sp?). so people with un-dx'd DH

may live with outbreaks for years rubbing steroidal creams on them.

When in fact it could clear up with just a change in the diet,

nevermind all the other health issues associated with un-dx'd celiac.

Good luck with the steak! My husband always teases me about steak

and how i " can demolish a 48oz prime rib in 2.2 " HA! never tried,

but i might be able to given the chance!! Good luck with your

chance!

Keep us posted!

Just make sure they let you cut it up before the timer starts! It would take

me 10 minutes to cut a steak that size up :) Good luck, we'll be rooting for

you.
