Today's therapy was to take her down thehall, refuse to give her a drink of water, and makeher fold pillow cases for a couple of hours. She'dhad a catheter for 4 weeks while she was in thehospital, so now she is incontinent and the aide thatgot her up this morning refused to put a water proofpad like a diaper for her, so while she was in"therapy" she peed all over herself. *I* had toexplain to them that she'd had the catheter andcouldn't hold her urine. They said they didn't know. Now what kind of facility doesn't pass on theapporpriate information or has employees who don'tlisten to the patient? I *know* there are caringnurses aids out there, I used to be one, but theydon't seem to work at this facility. I'm upset andshe's frustrated. She told the social worker todaythat if she'd had a sharp knife she'd have doneherself in this morning. Now *I* know she didn't meanit, it was just her voicing her frustration, but thesocial worker doesn't. Now I hope they don't decideshe's a nut job and refuse to do anything for her. AARRGGHH!!!!!! Guest guest
There is absolutely no excuse for poor management of this problem. One of the main functions of a CNA is to help maintain dignity issues. In our facility, we have bladder retraining programs for helping to reinforce the brain signals between the bladder and the brain. Now some problems are simply mechanical problems that can't be corrected by this means, and, for this, we have disposables. I can't believe that the idiot NA wouldn't have seen about this properly. In our facility, it has to be documented that a person is incontinent before any distribution of disposables is made, mainly because of accounting for these products, but to deny a person this, when they have ASKED for these, is beyond my comprehension. Do you mean to tell me that she was FORCED to work, or did she volunteer to do this on her own? We're talking about patient abuse here, I do believe. While I know some folks don't have problems after removal, most do have some leakage problems. Mom had problems BEFORE she had the cathether and they knew she had problems the day before after the removal and the aide that day did use a disposable pad for her. There are quite a few in the closet in her room, so it's not like they aren't there, but as for documentation, I don't know. I know the pads aren't cheap and accounting for items used is necessary, but I'll go out and buy her some Depends if they can't afford to use the pads for her. I asked her yesterday if she wanted me to get some and she said no, she'd use what the facility had. Now as for folding the pillow cases, they said it was occupational rehab. She didn't refuse to do it although she has been retired for more than 20 years. MY issue is that they refused to give her a drink of water and in my thinking, the refusal to give her a water proof pad and a drink of water is abuse, plain and simple. Folding pillow cases may not be the most thrilling thing to do, but she's at least out of the room doing something. *I* think the emphasis needs to be on her physical therapy so she can regain her strength and at least be able to walk with a walker. The house is not wheelchair accessible at all. Love Chris Oh yes, they are going to get an earful this afternoon at 2:00 pm. I have to attend a post admission meeting then. I'm beginning to think I need to call around to other facilities where we know people who have been there and see if I can get her on a waiting list for a bed. Guest guest
Ah good - so the post admission meeting is with the management. It's very worrying that this sort of thing can go on. I do hope you get somewhere (and a BIG apology!) with them. Love Chris Re: OT - I'm so pissed --- wrote:> Kathy, this is absolutely appalling! Can you speak> to the manager of the hospital about it? Guest guest
Is it documented anywhere at all that your mother was refused water? You need to document dates, times, and the names of the staff involved. You might also check to see if there is a doctor's order in her charts that restricts her water. Once you have that, report this to the state, fast. Best case scenario here is that your mother is being inconvenienced. Worst case scenario is that someone could end up dead, and it 'might' be your mother. If everything is on the up and up, then the state will dismiss the charges. If there is sufficient evidence of wrong doing, then the state will take the necessary actions. You might also start asking about what the doctor or therapist is wanting to do to retrain your mother's bladder. There needs to be a plan or correction documented in her medical charts. What you are reporting is a serious matter, and you not only have the right to be upset, you also have the responsibility to be upset. Based on what you are telling us, there is reason for concern. Please keep us informed on how things go with you and your mother Hugs, in TX --- Kathy Kitzcat wrote: --------------------------------- --- wrote: > Kathy, this is absolutely appalling! None of them had an explaination of any sort, but the therapist did apologize to Mom and said she would look into it. I aldo brought up to them about the aide not putting a waterproof pad to keep Mom from peeing on herself. They are going to change Mom's meds back to what she had been on before, along with her arthritis med which they took her off of. They are going to get an order for an appetite stimulant and for a supplement she can drink since she is not eating. After seeing their meals, I don't blame her for not wanting to eat. They don't have the resources the hospital does for meals, but they could make an effort to make them look appetizing. They also had her diagnosed as diabetic, which she isn't. She is hypoglycemic, which is a related condition, but not the same. I'm still not totally happy with them, but I do feel better after the meeting.
