Guest guest
Wonderful news. Congratulations! Dawn C. Sharing the good news I get to keep the temp job! The woman for whom I was filling in temporarily for the month of December, while she was on maternity leave, decided to make it permanent! I am now " it " at the local Women's Health Center. They do have one in-house transcriptionist as well, but I think she only does STAT reports, and doesn't transcribe fulltime. I am thrilled! It does mean I have to drive into town to pick up and drop off every day, ten miles in and ten miles back, but I'm finding out that's not as bad as I thought it would be. They pay by the hour, so I don't need to be obsessed with line counts, and they are great to work with, and so far I am still able to keep my other, non-medical account to justify having my satellite Internet connection. I've gotten spoiled and I don't want to have to give that up now, so I just have to make sure I earn at least $100 a month on that account (it drops down to $60-something after the first year, which will be in July). The timing is perfect, as our house payment will begin within the next few weeks, so I feel relatively secure in the knowledge that I will have a steady income. It's a real ego boost for a single mom with four kids, to actually be able to make a house payment from working at home. Just a bit of encouragement to those other moms out there still looking for that first job. They are out there, just keep at it, things will fall into place. :-) Lynn Van Couvering Moonbug Studio (www.gate.net/~lynnvc) Lynn's Transcription Service

Guest guest
Lynn, I am so excited for you. This is indeed wonderful news. I'm sure your kids are excited too, knowing that their mom won't have to be leaving home to go to work everyday, except for that dropping off and picking up. Maybe you can eventually get them onto some kind of system that will be in your house and sending via the internet. But for now, just enjoy. Guest guest
Satellite is a big topic. I opted for the system rather than the Starband, because the cost of the equipment is spaced out over a year, rather than having to be paid upfront. Starband would have cost around $600 or more just to install, plus the monthlies, whereas the system is $100 a month, about half for the service and half for the equipment, and then it goes down after a year. I love having it, it makes downloading a sound file that took 2 1/2 minutes over my phone modem flick by in about 5 seconds, and that is very important for the non-medical account I do. I have had some problems with it because they installed it using the wrong type of connectors, which allowed moisture in, which corroded the pins and eliminated my signal. I would get interruptions on a daily basis, and could only restore my connection by rebooting the computer. They finally got it all straightened out, and I'm a happy camper again. If you do go with satellite (I'm also in the boonies, not even on the cable guy's map), insist that they use a straight run of cable from the dish to your surge suppressor, and that they use waterproof connectors and " dielectric compound " (sp?). It comes in a tube and looks like toothpaste, but feels dry, like the kind of deodorant that squeezes out of the holes. He showed me when he came back for the second time to replace corroded connectors. The problem was originally caused by his helper, for whom this was a first install of a system, and we think he used those connectors because it was meant to be a temporary install in the heat of summer, but due to delays, is still there. He will do a complete reinstall when we move, very soon I hope, and use all new connectors and as much of a straight run as possible. Also, if you do decide to go with satellite, shop around locally! I got widely varying prices from several local dealers/installers. Lynn Re: Sharing the good news Congrats on being permanent! It sounds like a great situation for you! I'm curious about your satellite internet connection. I'm having to get either DSL or satellite for work. I'm still waiting to find out if I can even HAVE DSL, as I'm in the boonies. If I can't, I'll need satellite. Starband is being recommended to me, but not the others, for the particular hospital dictation system I'll have to use. Which do you use? Is there an upload/download factor involving your work, and how fast is that? I hear mixed reviews. Are there any idiosyncracies about it I should be aware of (or warned about), either regarding doing work on it or in general? Thanks much! patb Pat's Paradise Where there's kicking and screaming All the way to high speed. :/ Sharing the good news I get to keep the temp job!
