I had a CT scan done today and was given mucomyst to help prevent kidney damage. I have not seen any mention of using this before and after CT scans, and after reading up on it, this seems like a good thing.

I was told to take 6mls mixed into 8oz. of water 24 hours before the scan and again 12 hrs, before the scan. Then the same dose again 1 hr. after, and another 12 hours after that.

It was easy to mix and easy to take, with no taste.

The research says it helps keep a patient hydrated, keeps mucas thin, and is a strong antioxident. Apparently the contrast used for CTs lets loose a lot of free radicals which can damage the kidneys.

The liver docs said it was a new preventive treatment, my pharmacist mentioned it was also being used for acetiminophen (tylenol) overdose.

If anyone is scheduled for CT scans in the near future, you might want to inquire if this is a good thing for you.
