Well, it just goes to show, not one thing works for everyone. For me it's soaps and smelly things that touch my skin. And it's an accumulation. I can use a smelly soap once or twice in a 2-3 day period, but if I try for another time, I have an outbreak. For my son, it's the same with smelly things and his diet is a big contributor. When he is strict with diet (avoiding casein, soy and rotating berries), his eczema is non-existent. For months, he can go without an outbreak. While on the gfcf diet, he was the most clear. Sorry to hear that didn't work for your child or for you but this can help some, many or more. Even if it helps a few, it's worth it. Even if it's only my child, it's worth it.

Hi Dawn,My son suffered from horrible eczema and we tried it all- dermatologists, DAN! docs, the works. We finally consulted National Jewish Hospital in Denver, Colorado. They have an excellent outpatient program that I can say cured our son- this coming from a mom with a son with Autism who does not believe in the word cure. Our doctors were Harvard trained and had to "retrain my brain" from all the garbage I had been fed by the DAN! docs. Eczema is an INHERITED DISEASE (hard to imagine...but even I figured out I had suffered from it too) and no amount of Epsom Salts or supplements or expensive diet was going to help.If you would like to email me privately I would be happy to share our little blog we wrote while in the hospital. It chronicles our treatment and the daily support and medical advice we received from the team.At the time we decided to visit National Jewish, I can honestly say I had nearly given up on our son. We felt so helpless. I will say that that trip was the BEST THING WE HAVE EVER DONE FOR OUR SON. My son never had any huge developmental gains from the diet. We have him with food restrictions because of how those foods affect his overall health. The gluten makes his belly so big and bloated, he goes to the bathroom less often and we had linked some of his aggression to gluten intake, along with sugar. Again, both are accumulative for him. Since he is not hugely affected developmentally, he does partake in birthday cakes and occasional pizza. The dairy (casein) is what causes his eczema, again accumulative effect. A single yogurt over a 2-3 day period is not going to affect him.

Only you know how the foods affect your child. This type of rotation diet works for him. We monitor his belly, which has not looked as lean as when he was more strictly on the diet. We monitor his eczema. We also educate him on how the foods affect him to the extent he is able to understand. He is very funny walking through grocery stores reading labels for "gluten free" foods.

Epsom salt baths are avoided in our house when he has an outbreak as they tend to worsen the condition.

found this on the internet...An Epsom salt bath is rich in magnesium which is essential for your body, as this helps to eliminate all the harmful acids on your skin. Also by taking this bath and soaking yourself will reduce your muscular pain and alleviate your body stress, making it something like a spa bath. There are a lot of bathing recipes online that makes use of Epsom salts. Some of these recipes even include essential oils for added aromatherapy. You must always remember that eczema is often attributed to skin dryness, and that's what you have to avoid. Also note, do not use any kind of soap when taking an Epsom salt bath or else it would obstruct the healing action of the salts. You can soak in for about 15 minutes and gently give your skin a good gentle rub.Although this bath is very helpful to moisture your skin and eliminate all the unwanted skin enzymes, this alone is not enough to cure eczema. Along with this Epsom salty bath treatment you must also follow a good diet of fruits and vegetables that are rich in Vitamin E and Aloe Vera. These 2 ingredients are essential for a healthy looking skin, as they are responsible for the skin defence system. Without them we can not win the battle against Eczema.> > > Dawn,> >> > Why not just take him to a dermatologist, a skin expert?> >> > > >> >> >> > > > To: sList > > Sent: Wed, March 31, 2010 9:33:27 AM> > Subject: Re: Eczema> >> >> > I have read that any food allergen can cause but have seen gluten as > > the factor in many cases. We tried ointments initially but they actually exacerbated the eczema. Cetaphil cream (in the tub) has been the best otc. We also use California Baby unscented bubble bath or wash and sometimes Dove for sensitive skin. We avoid all smelly detergents, which is so hard because there are so many good smelling things out there right now.

I may take him again. I took him last year and she gave me a ointment to put on when it flares up really bad......other than that we use Cetaphil. We are have flare ups more often so I may need to revisit the Dermatologist to see what she says about it now. Last Jan was the first time he even had a break so it is all still new to me. Thanks

We have been tring to take him off the GFCF diet and it seems to work but then when we give him to much stuff off the diet his Eczema on his elbows flares up really bad. I would like to know what is causing the eczema...... .what he might be having a problem with. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. I have thought of an allergist but do no think that he would coperate with the testing that they would do. Would a GI doctor be good for this as it does seem it happens when he eats something?

Thanks you for any information Dawn

I have had eczema for 57 years now. There are different reasons why it appears. There are different means of treating it. it is a process of elimination. I do not believe there is a cure although I am so happy for it leaving your son Kristi. It goes into remission like any other autoimmune disease does. Dr's. can only give you medication for the skin, or predisone for the body to ingest. Not every medication works on everyone so they keep switching until they find the right one for you. Diets need to be changed as do environments. It is a lot quicker to get the allergy testing done if you think he can sit for the shin tests. or..you can be the Dr. too. Animals, dust, mold, rugs, birds or pets. laundry detergents, soaps, cleaning produsts, material on blankets or pillows.....the list is

endless. remove them all and start with a clean environment, little by little say every 3 days to a week add something and see if there is a reaction. it can be anything!!!! foods are such a large input, what goes in reacts on the skin. there are certain foods that are at the top of the list. Dairy, wheat, some fruits, vegetables. again it could be anything. There is no special diet or bath or soaps or medicines or environments...it is an individual skin problem and you need your own individual plan. hope this helps. in all my years with this problem I can only tell you to be patient. It will change constantly...what works today may not work tomorrow. And one thing will not work for all. I wish you all the best

I have had eczema most of my life. I used to get it only when I sweat a lot. I have it on my scalp, face and neck. I get it now when I'm really stressed. I use t-gel shampoo and have to have my hair pulled up a lot when its hot. I also use coraid Sent on the Sprint® Now Network from my BlackBerry®

It chronicles our treatment and the daily support and medical advice we received from the team.At the time we decided to visit National Jewish, I can honestly say I had nearly given up on our

son. We felt so helpless. I will say that that trip was the BEST THING WE HAVE EVER DONE FOR OUR SON. His autism is still there, but to take that suffering away changed him forever.>> I feel that it helped when we first started it 5 years ago. I wanted to see if it was still helping or if we could take him off of it.  Finances take a big toll on this decision also. So far I have not seen any behavior or tummy issues when he has been given Gluten although I am also giving him a Gluten Ease pill each time I give him Gluten...... .but when I have forgotten we still see no problems.>  > Dawn>  > > >
