Guest guest
, Welcome to the group My dd was banded from 8.5 to 11.5 months. She was a mild/moderate case. Check out her Before and After DOC Band pictures here. The two following pictures are her also. Since the pictures are so small it's difficult to see the difference in her forehead, but you can really see a big change in her ear alignment. We were glad she got her band before her 9 mo growth spurt. Have you gotten a consult with a provider? Cranial Technologies offers free consults. You can see their locations here. The clinicians go through extensive training so they have a good idea on plagio and if banding would be best. You can also check out the band database here to see where some members went. Here is a great list of questions to ask a orthotist to gauge their experience level. Good luck with your decision. Guest guest
Thank you! I hope I'm posting right...I'm still getting used to this board! I hope I make the right choice. He ear alignment is what reall bothers me. I don't want it to cause problems later on, in case she needs glasses. I will check out the pictures, and links you sent! Thank you again! Guest guest
Hello to everyone! This post makes me feel better already. In regard to your decision, if you're on the board, it sounds like you may have a gut instinct that there is a problem? I can only speak from experience - my daughter is 5 months old, and I noticed the problem and tried to correct with positioning for the last 10 weeks. The side got better and the back is worse. All of the pediatricians in our group say that I'm crazy to get a helmet and it will resolve on its own, and that the specialist would never recommend a helmet. (one of the pediatricians that disagrees with getting the helmet also told me to always follow my maternal instincts). I can't understand why pediatricians seem lax about this issue, but kids don't seem to usually grow out of it. I took her in to a craniofacial specialist 6 weeks ago, and the flattening increased, going on a scall of 10 from a 2 to 3/3.5. The specialist says she's in a gray area, but when I asked what he'd do, he said put a helmet on. It's scary and I hate that we have to do this, but also feel blessed that we have an opportunity to try and fix it. One of her eyes is slightly off - but no one sees it but me and the doctor!, and the flattening can only be seen from one side and the top of her head. Initially, my husband deferred to the peds, but after discussing it and sending him some research he now agrees, even though it's hard to think of your baby in a helmet. Good luck with everything and I'll keep you posted. We hope we're doing the right thing also!! > In a message dated 2/24/2006 10:03:47 AM Eastern Standard Time, gradygirl79@... writes: > > Hi! > I just found this board, and need some advice. > My daughter is 8 months old, and we have seen a neurosurgeon twice > regarding her Plagio. Guest guest
Hi , As long as you're going to a reputable facility and using an experienced ortho I do think it's worth it in a mild case, but even more so b/c of her ear alignment. If you think about it 5mm is really quite a bit for an ear to be out of alignment and she may have trouble getting glasses to fit properly if it doesnt' fix itself. She's also getting older to the point where repositioning is less effective. My daughter was pretty mild for her last band, but we're very glad we did it, especially for the ears. You can see a big difference in them! The pics are on her website below if you're interested. Good luck with your decision. , mom to Hannah, DOCgrad http://hannahsnoggin.typepad.com Cape Cod, Ma > > Hi! > I just found this board, and need some advice. > My daughter is 8 months old, and we have seen a neurosurgeon twice > regarding her Plagio. Guest guest
Welcome, We have had plenty of babies here that were banded when considered mild. If the nuero is ok with a band being done, I would have to think there is something there that he feels should be treated. The bands are not as bad as you think and the babies really adjust to them completely. It bothers us parents more than them most times, lol. You'll have to ask yourself if her headshape never changed from what it is now, can I live with that? That will give you your answer. Guest guest
Hello again. I checked and my daughter is at 6mm (and was 3/3.5 out of 10), and the specialist recommended the band. > > > > Hi! > > I just found this board, and need some advice. > > My daughter is 8 months old, and we have seen a neurosurgeon twice > > regarding her Plagio. We tried repositioning and tummy time and I personally thought it looked better, but our pediatrician said he needed a helmet. Off we went to the specialist and he was diagnosed with moderate plagio and tort. I wish you the best. Have you consulted Cranial Tech? They won't recommend a band unless she needs one.
