Hi Rhonda,

Thanks for the tip on which way I sleep on this darn bald spot. You see I had

not made

that connection yet. LOL

I just saw your list of questions, but I am sorry, I do not know what you are

doing for

you Graves, to be able to shorten my answers, and direct them to you personally.

-Pam- who must not have been paying attention that day...Sorry :(

I'm off to a quick job, but shall return.

Hi Rhonda,

I will try to answer some of your questions, though some I don't know.

Jody

1. I didn't know your hair stops growing...mine has been at the same length

for so long....nails too...any way to counter this problem? Why does it

happen?

When you hit remission or euthyroid, both your hair and nails will grow

again. Mine stop growing when I am hypO, my nails get very thin and break

right down and they get those little lines in them and I have no natural

enamel on the ones on my left hand only...go figure :)

2. Does dry skin actually mean you are more towards " normal " ? Or did I

misunderstand that post?

I'm not sure on this. My skin was very dry when I was hyper, but in the

cold months it gets really dry then too. But then, I could just be weird.

3. Iodine or not? Kelp, seafood, etc. or not? I'm confused.

I can't remember what your treatment is...ATD's or RAI? I did the RAI in

'96 but I still have some function left in my thyroid. When I do shellfish;

shrimp, clams, scallops...I get that old hyper buzz. It doesn't last long

unless I overindulge, which I have done and it caused problems for me.

I have never had kelp, and I use iodine free salt, and now take my salt

shaker in my purse, when I remember, if we are going out to eat.

BUT... just posted that she has seen no effects with iodine rich foods.

Hopefully others will chime in with their experiences here. When I hyper,

my first endo told me to avoid iodine rich foods, but I fired her...

4. Do you crave salt when on hypo side, or can it be both?

I have only noticed the salt cravings when I am hypO...so I don't know.

5. I thought someone mentioned that The Thyroid Sourcebook was not good. I

also have checked out The Thyroid Book (Surks), and Thyroid Solution -- both

of which I like and I have had The Thyroid Book several times before. I

want to buy a couple to keep and wanted to check about the Sourcebook before

I read it or buy it. Where is the best place (i.e., best deal) on these

books? I really don't want to shell out a ton of money on books right now

if I'm not going to at least get some credit hours out of them, lol. :)

Keep in mind, this is only *my* opinion. I have no respect for Sara

Rosenthal...I started out with her book, The Thyroid Sourcebook and it was

okay...but I have found other articles of her lagging in content, in my

opinion...about 6/8 months ago I became downright angry with her, and give

her no credence whatsoever after reading an article on the American Thyroid

Association (I think that is it, I will check for sure tomorrow) by Ms.

Rosenthal on which she bashed Armour Thyroid, stated emphatically that it

was too NEW to know if it will really work and touted the miracles of

Synthroid...

1 - Synthroid and all synthetic hormones are the NEW ones, Armour has been

around a very long time and was used regularly until the new *miracle*

synthetic hormones came along. Is it perfect, no, but it sure has done a

lot for the quality of my life.

2 - She sounds like the spokesperson for the Synthroid company, and after

being on synthroid for over 4 years and dealing with the total

inconsistencies with it and the lack of ANY quality to the conversion of a

straight T4 (synthroid) to the T3 (what your body actually uses) was not

there and I became a wreck, emotionally, physically and every other way you

can imagine. (btw I have thrown OUT my Rosenthal book, I wouldn't even lend

it to someone else)

The 2 books I can and do recommend are The Thyroid Solution by Dr. Ridha

Arem and Graves Disease; A Practical Guide by our own Elaine . You can

get them both from barnesandnoble.com with a 20% discount and if you order 2

items from them, free shipping. My next book will be Shomons book on

hypOT...for the moment the title escapes me...I'm sorry about that.

Remember, these are only my opinions, I am sure others will have other

suggestions.

6. I am really concerned about the Dt. Pepsi issue....totally addicted, and

know I have to quit, but now I'm freaked.....I still need to get to the

sites mentioned in the posts, but thanks for this heads up...I had no idea.

Yeah, I know, once you really start reading about this stuff it scares the

begeebers out of you. I'm glad you are going to be quitting.

7. So, soy is only supposed to be bad if Hypo? I'm a vegetarian, so this

really concerns me and is it if you are Hypo long-term or " Hypothyroid " as

your, I don't know exactly how you would put it, but as your original

condition/diagnosis? I mean, at the same time, when/if I go Hypo, am I

still considered Hyperthyroid, or am I then Hypothyroid, or does the term

Graves Disease say enough????

No clue here at all, I don't use soy.

>>>Thanks so much for your help, already and in the future. I am learning

>>>so much....worrying more at times too, but I think it is part of the

>>>learning process and that's okay. Take care everyone!<<<

You are very welcome. Everyone of us here as been the new person looking

for answers at one time or another...and I am still learning from this group

everyday. It also helps me to help others.

Being worried is natural...heck the name of this disease is scary when

hearing it for the first time. The more you learn, the more involved you

are in your treatment, the easier many things get. The best thing I can

offer you is to remind you to be good to yourself, try to get rid of stress

as much as you can, and learn the relaxation and breathing techniques. I

ignored that sage advice in the beginning of my learning but once I started

using them, my life improved so much.

Take care ask away :)

Several questions re: recent posts and more

Hello! I have been writing down things as I read the posts, books, and

while thinking about this crazy condition in which I now find myself. Any

help, clarification, direction for answers, etc. would be greatly

appreciated. I apologize for not researching them myself...but there are

quite a few, and I was hoping you all might have the answers now.

1. I didn't know your hair stops growing...mine has been at the same length

for so long....nails too...any way to counter this problem? Why does it

happen?

2. Does dry skin actually mean you are more towards " normal " ? Or did I

misunderstand that post?

My skin was horribly dry when I was hypO from the ATDs.

3. Iodine or not? Kelp, seafood, etc. or not? I'm confused.

NOT, if you're hyper.

4. Do you crave salt when on hypo side, or can it be both?

5. I thought someone mentioned that The Thyroid Soucebook was not good. I

also have checked out The Thyroid Book (Surks), and Thyroid Solution -- both

of which I like and I have had The Thyroid Book several times before. I

want to buy a couple to keep and wanted to check about the Sourcebook before

I read it or buy it. Where is the best place (i.e., best deal) on these

sites mentioned in the posts, but thanks for this heads up...I had no idea.

I've been trying to get my mother to stop using aspartame for 10 years now.

I went ballistic when I found out my ex-mother-in-law was giving my daughter

diet soft drinks. They've all been forbidden to feed her anything with

aspartame in it! The reason at that time was that back around the time she

was born, I had heard it caused brain damage in children. Now I see even

more what a poison it is. Sadly, a lot of parents think it's better to

give kids diet stuff because of the sugar issue with teeth. My daughter is

11 years old and has never had a cavity, and when she drinks soft drinks or

chews gum, or eats anything sweet, it has real sugar in it, not some

artificial sweetener. I forwarded the recent posts on aspartame to my

mother, and she said she will finally listen this time!

7. So, soy is only supposed to be bad if Hypo? I'm a vegetarian, so this

That's my understanding--soy is bad for hypO. Also, I believe from what

everyone has told me, you have Graves Disease for life, but you may be hyper

or hypo or euthyroid (balanced). I've also heard that a large number of

Graves patients end up going hypO on their own--like the thyroid eventually

just burns itself out.

Thanks so much for your help, already and in the future. I am learning so

much....worrying more at times too, but I think it is part of the learning

process and that's okay. Take care everyone!

Moist, not sweaty but very soft, skin is a classic symptom of Graves. I

tend to get very chapped hands in the winter, guess it goes along with

the rest of my father's good look, a small sacrifice to pay.>

Good luck, Rhonda, you found the right place.
