I went to an Al-Anon meeting by mistake in 1983 when I was ordered by the nAAvy

to go to a twelve-step meeting. I figured I'd stay and see what it was like.

The woman leading the meeting she found the ideas contained in a " non-approved "

book helpful. As she began to explain how specifically these ideas helped her

the " head cackling hen " interrupted her and the rest of the meeting was devoted

to chastising her for daring to refer to non-Al-Anon literature.

Yes, Al-Anon is much more anal about this (and some other aspects of

meetings) than is AA. One member was amazed and horrified when I told her

that that the little black " 24 Hours A Day " book was Hazelden, and NOT AA

Conference-Approved Literature. Her husband, I, and many other AA'ers

used it as their 'daily meditation' book, and she had attended many open

AA meetings where it was read from. The overwhelmeming majority don't

know or don't want to hear that things such as allowing " non-alcoholics "

(such as Al-Anon members) to " share " in an AA meeting might go against

traditions.

I recall reading an Al-Anon phamplet on how material becomes " Al-Anon

Conference-Approved Literature " . It went into detail to tell how and why

things things are read to determine if they correspond to " Al-Anon ideas " .
