Question on Oats?

Oats are on the off list due to cross contamination.

Are there any Celiacs who eat oats anyway?

There was an article in Gluten Free living Vol 9 No 3 on oats which

peaked my interest.

My ds2 didn't have outward reactions to oats in cereals such as Lucky

Charms (these have Wheat Starch, so they are an out) or Captain

Crunch. I just wonder if he could eat these on occassion or if the

cross contamination is too high to risk the possibility of internal

damage without an outward response...

My dh and I attended the Patient Education Day at the Celiac Disease Center at

Columbia University this summer, and there was a whole session about the oat

question. Here in the USA there is very high contamination of oats with wheat.

That is because they are almost always processed together. Quaker is the worst,

but others have the same problem. Oats from Ireland have much less

contamination, and it could be okay to eat them for some people. They mentioned

McCains and maybe another brand. They definitely suggested waiting at least 6

months to a year (I think) after starting the gf diet before trying oats.

unless you have probs. It all depends upon how picky you and your GI tract are.

I eat McCanns from Ireland. They even have a quick oatmeal now. Some

people with sprue can't tolerate even uncontaminated oats, however.
