Here is the link. To be honest with you I've never listened to the

radio over the internet. I'm just going to click on " Listen to KQED

Live " and figure it out or call someone who knows.

I just checked out the link, and it gives two ways to do it. One is

using RealPlayer software, the other is with Windows Media Player.

Both these packages are fairly large, particularly if you're

downloading over a modem, so, you may want to give yourself some

extra time if you don't have the software installed already. When I

say " extra time " , I mean at *least* two hours, especially if you're

going to download it tomorrow morning (busy traffic time for the

Internet).

Listening via Windoze Media Player worked fine, with no problems.

The media player is built into Microsoft's newer releases, so you

might ready to listen as is, and not have any further work to do.

Next, I tried to listen via RealPlayer, and it didn't work for me -

it seemed to expect the absolute latest-and-greatest version of the

software on my end, and I'm a couple of versions behind. I didn't

think it was worth downloading a 10 MB upgrade, especially since my

current version of RealPlayer works just fine for listening to the

Iditarod, and thus I'm happy with it. But, if you're planning to use

RealPlayer, be warned, you might need to upgrade.

Incidentally, regarding time zones - while I was listening, the

station announced the time as 9 PM (it's midnight here in the East) -

so, I guess the reference to Pacific *Daylight* Time must have been a

misprint.

Thanks for the info, . When I tried it with Windows Media Player

it seemed to work, but I would get a message " buffering " every once in

awhile and it would pause. It seemed that the message was intact

after the pause... did yours do that too?

Yeah, and that's normal. You're actually hearing the broadcast

several seconds after it happens - those few seconds are stored,

or " buffered " in your PC's memory, so that if the Internet burps for

a second or so, your PC can go on playing the stored audio without

interruption while waiting for the incoming data stream to resume.

Occasionally, the burp is a little longer, and the buffer in your

software runs out - then, the audio stops temporarily. But as you

noticed, it picks up right where it left off when that happens.

Dang! It worked just fine last night. Now the media player stops dead

in it's tracks after apparently making a successful connect with the

server. R should be on in about two hours. I don't think the problem

is on my end.

I just tried here with Windows Media Player, and got exactly the same

thing, even when I tried through both ISPs that I have accounts

with. Yeah, sounds like there's a problem on their end - or maybe

the Internet is just really jammed.

Thanks for the help on this guys. However, I am in a real jam. I

have taken the day off, driven 50 miles to be by a sound computer

with access to an open telephone, and I have never felt dumber in my

life. At one point I got the box with the sunshine smiley face

saying " playing " but I get no sound. I'm on a new gateway with

windows 98. That's all I can tell you. Keep the hints comming.

Same here-it's not you. I suggest you test the media player in the

meantime and make sure the audio works (software and speakers).

Try this:

http://windowsmedia.com/radiotuner/default.asp

I choose a jazz station and pressed " play " at the bottom. It's

playing fine but it did'nt bring up the media player interface.
