Guest guest
Hi guys, i just got back from my first whole body scan. the scan showed some parts of where the thyroid use to be lit up, and in the salvitory glands. They say this is very normal. And to come back in 6 months and do a whole body scan again. is this normal? I mean there were no other spots lit up, so why am i not happy? was it wrong to assume that 4 weeks after my TT and 10 days after the RAI that i would get a clean scan, nothing lit up? the radiolgist said it was normal, some have more lit up some have less, and we will know more in 6 months. I guess i was expecting a more encouraging responce. i mean he was nice, and didn't scare me, but then why am i so scared still. The chance of it being cancer tissue is slim cause the cancer did not spread. But should i of expected to hear clean scan the first time, and only 10 days after the RAI? jodi
Guest guest
Jodi, This is completely normal--the thyroid remnant (which we all have-- even after " total " thyroidectomy) has absorbed the radioactive iodine and is showing up on the scan. The purpose of the post-RAI scan is to identify if there is evidence of activity in other parts of the body. The RAI will eventually destroy all thyroid tissue--cancerous and normal. That's why we hope for a " clean " scan at 6 months or a year post RAI. That's the scan that counts. Guest guest
Jodi, It takes from 6 to 12 months for RAI to do its job completely -- so, yes, it's unreasonable to assume that you would have a clean scan only 10 days after RAI. Your 6 month scan might be clean; you should at least see fewer areas lit up. I didn't have a totally clean scan until 12 months after RAI, but I've been having them for 13 years now, so I guess the RAI worked :-). Your radiologist sounds as though he knows what he's talking about. Hope this helps, ellen -- mailto:ellen@...
Guest guest
Hi Jody, I had exactly the same results on my WBS after RAI. They told me I had residue takeup in the Thyroid bed and a small amount to the left of my thyroid bed. I have just had a clean scan 6 months later. The RAI still works on the tissue even after the WBS. I was told it would likely dissapear by my next scan and they were right.
