Everyone I need prayers. My nephew, Jimmy, is going in for triple by-pass surgery tomorrow AM. He has a baby just 8 months old. Please say a prayer for him and his family.

I will be sure to put you in my prayers. I do have SLE and AIH. However, my only child was born years before I knew I had either. She was born in 1982, just before I turned 21. I was diagnosed with SLE in Oct 96 (at 35) and AIH in Jan 03 (at 41). I know of numerous people with SLE that have had babies after diagnosis. I've also read that a lot of people with AIH have children. I'm taking a guess here, but I would say that it would be possible to have a child with both. The key would be to getting both diseases under control as much as possible prior to even trying to become pregnant. I do know that pregnancy will limit some of the meds you can take. I have also read that about 1/3 of the time autoimmune disorders will get better during pregnancy, 1/3 of the time they will stay the same, and 1/3 of the time they get worse. It is also not uncommon to have a major flare of autoimmune disorders right after the baby is born. You have to go into a pregnancy knowing all that and maybe having a game plan for extra help. One of the major things to be aware of with SLE is that 50% of people with SLE have the antiphospholipid antibody syndrome, which can cause miscarriage, blood clots, strokes, and heart disease. It is easily detected by a blood test for the lupus anitcoagulant and anticardiolipin antibodies. If they know you have it before you become pregnant, they can normally prevent miscarriage. I think they put you on a low dose of asprin throughout pregnancy, but I could be wrong on that. I didn't find out I have the lupus anticoagulant until Jul 02, so pregnancy was not an issue for me. I am now on coumadin (and will be for life) in hopes that we will prevent a blood clot, stroke, or heart disease.

I can definitely relate to being desparate to have a baby. Despite the fact that I was not quite 21 when my daughter was born, my husband (now ex) and I had been trying to have a baby for over 4 years when I got pregnant. We got married when I was just 16 (don't ask why - just stupid I guess!) and had wanted to have a baby right away. For years, I cried each month when my period started! Finally, with the help of an infertility specialist, I got pregnant the one month out of all those years that we had been trying. I had knee surgery the day before my period was due to start. Low and behold, it never started and I was pregnant! I had a chest x-ray, was put to sleep, given valium and demerol, and who knows what else while I was pregnant. That may explain why I puked my guts out after surgery! Anyway, apparantly the surgery, x-ray, etc. didn't hurt the baby. Although, we do tell her that's what's wrong with her! (of course we are only kidding as she is a beautiful, bright, 21 year old young lady today)

Dear , thankyou very much for your reply to my e-mail. I havn`t

been on the computer for a few days, so i have just noticed it.

I am on Prednisolone only at the moment, as i could not tolerate

Imuran. So far i have been on Pred, for the past four years. I havn`t

had much relief from my symptoms, and my gastro told me all my

symptoms were probably due to my liver. ( i don`t know how he can say

that, they didn`t get a decent biopsy to be able to tell how bad my

liver was) Fortunately my doctor decided to send me to an

Immunologist. All my serology came back positive for SLE. I have also

been diagnosed with Reynauds. Hopefully now i might be given the

appropiate treatment. Also they took some more blood, to take more

tests, i`m not sure what for.

I have heard of the anti body that can cause miss- carriage. That is

the next Question i will be asking them.

I`m glad to meet someone who knows how painful infirtility can be. I

have been trying for years, this is my third surgery to remove

endometriosis. I`m hoping a new hospital, a new outcome.

It seems a really young age to me (21) to have a child, but i`m

wishing i wouldn`t have waited so long...

I would be really interested in knowing some of your symptoms that

you were experiencing, and also a little about the drug you are on.

Does it help much?

I get so tired i don`t even know if i could cope with a child, but

i`ve got alot of people around me willing to help out if i need it.

I`m so glad your daughter was born healthy(thats another worry i

have) I don`t want my child to have any of these conditions. My

mother has PBC, my dad suffers from Psorisis. But out of four

children i`m the only one with health problems.Lucky me.
