Guest guest Posted July 1, 2000 Report Share Posted July 1, 2000 Yes, I agree, they helped us so much and really cut down on his frustration level of not being able to communicate what he wanted to us since we had learned what specific gestures meant. And a big misconception is that you have to use actual sign language as hearing impaired people do but it's not so. I did already know some signs from my work with children with special needs but in that book (Baby Signs) it helped me to understand that it didn't matter what sort of sign we used, just so that he and I/daddy agreed that it was the sign for a specific thing. After Drake got the hang of it, I even found that he would make up his own signs and teach them to me!! Funny story--I'd taught Drake the sign for cheese, which is rubbing your palms together. Many times it took me to figure out that when he was signing " cheese " and I tried to give him some and he refused that he was actually using that same sign for " please " .
