Guest guest
Sophia, This is very strange. The swelling that results from edema or pred is decidedly not one-sided. If this is more than a little bit (generally, one half of a body may be more a tiny bit more developed/bigger) than the other, I'd call my GP. Guest guest
Thanks Cy, I will ask my doctor about it. It never occurred to me that this one sided swelling was unusual until I really thought about it...I just assumed it was a side effect from the pred. And of course, it's confusing b/c sometimes I *do* swell up on both sides, and sometimes it's one-sided. Sophia > Sophia, > This is very strange. Guest guest
Hi Sophia, Swelling on only one side does not seem typical of IgAN. I would mention that to your doctor. Guest guest
Sophia...do you sleep on your side...and is it your left side? When I was on higher doses of the prednisone I would swell up horribly on the side I slept on more so than the side I did not. I found the only way to prevent it was to force myself to sleep on my back. Now that I'm down to the 7.5mg I don't seem to have the problem with one sided swelling anymore and I can sleep however I like again. I would still bring it up to your doctor. Mine could never figure out exactly what was causing it...his theory was fluid settling on that side while sleeping and the prednisone just amplified the effect. Guest guest
Hi Amy, Yes, I do generally prefer to sleep on my left side...that's why at first I was not concerned about the occasional " left side swelling " ...it would happen in the morning then go away. I remember one of your posts talking about that, I guess that's why I didn't think it was a big deal at first. I'm concerned now because I've noticed the last couple of times, it appears that I do swell on my left side, usually towards the end of the day, and it doesn't seem to make any sense why (ie. can't see a reason for it to happen). This is why I wanted to see if anyone had this kind of experience, have any advice. Like you and and Cy said, I will mention it to the doctor. Guest guest
As far as I know, it can happen when initially exposed to a higher heat environment because the blood volume expands to compensate for the increased need for blood flow, blood flow in the extremities playing an important role in regulating our temperature. So your body retains salt and water at first in order to get that increased blood volume. The body should adjust after a while. I guess some people might be more susceptible to this than the average person.
