Has there been any changes in medications? Not just thyroid, but any?

Certain meds are known to cause carbohydrates cravings(noticably anti-depressants and I think cortisteroids)

changes in food cravings

Hi Guys, I have an odd question and i'm not sure it has anything to do with hypothyroidism but it's worth a shot!

Lately I have had some VERY noticeable changes in the types of food I want to eat. It's nothing strange like dirt or laundry soap or those pica-like things you hear of once in a while but it's just making me very curious as to what may be causing it.

Ok for one thing, I have been having the desire to eat sweets again. For the past...oh I don't know at least 5 years, I just don't like sweet things very much. In the past I have baked many a cake or tray of cookies, brownies etc for my kids and have it sitting on the kitchen counter for DAYS without me being tempted to take even a nibble, I just didn't want it. It's a hard to describe feeling. Almost like I *couldnt* eat it even if I wanted to. That's how strong it was. But lately....I want it all! Chocolate, brownies especially, cookies (oreos), candy bars. I have been very strong and not allowed to indulge myself except for a time or two, but it's definitely THERE and boy is it noticeable! I don't like it! I'm fat enough *without* having a sweet tooth! LOL

I should add, that during the time that I was "anti-sweets" I would crave things like mayo on everything! Mashed potatoes and gravy, chips and sour cream ...I would be the one at the birthday parties happily scarfing down chips and sour cream dip while others were eating cake and ice cream and I did this by choice! I was as content as can be! VERY heavy things that again I didn't allow myself to undulge but the feeling was definitely there. But now THAT part of my craving is gone! I will eat Mexican foods without a smidge of sour cream and not even miss it, when I used to drown it with sour cream. Sandwiches just taste better to me without mayo at all Pretty drastic stuff.

Any idea why? I mean I don't think it's anything to really worry about...but is it indicating some kind of imbalance? I have not changed meds, or my lifestyle in any way that I can think of that would bring this on. I'm still on 125 mcg of levothyroxene daily and that's about it.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Nope! Nothing! I've always been a carb addict I think, but just not a sweet carb addict.

I've been struggling with some high blood pressure reading while AT the docs office, so I was put on BP meds BUT since then eveytime I pass a BP machine, I use it and I am absolutely normal if not low...so I think it's just morons who give me high B/P Anyways they gave me something called methyldopo...but I only took it for one day hehe

Other than that everything has been business as usul!

Sweets are quick energy.... Chocolate is a brain thing... and there is an element in there, too, magnesium... does anyone remember for sure?

How are your vitamins? Taking a good multi, with meals?

That's all that's coming to mind for me right now...

Craving for salt and sweet sometimes indicate adrenal issues. The things that you are saying is how I used to be and my adrenals needed help.

That's all that's coming to mind for me right now...

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

on my counter! hehe I am so bad about remembering to take it. I'm

going to make a renewed effor though. I know it's very important, but

for some reason I am just brain damaged in that area! ;o)

Ayla

Can I ask what you did to fix this?

I have lost maybe 20 lbs since starting the levo in Mid may (it's been harder than pulling teeth to acheive this!!!) and even though I havent gained anything yet...I can predict disaster just around the corner if I dont do something about this and quick!!

Thanks everyone!Ayladawn prince wrote:

Craving for salt and sweet sometimes indicate adrenal issues. The things that you are saying is how I used to be and my adrenals needed help.

Sweets are quick energy.... Chocolate is a brain thing... and there is an element in there, too, magnesium... does anyone remember for sure?

How are your vitamins? Taking a good multi, with meals?

That's all that's coming to mind for me right now...

Hi Ayla,

I would have your blood sugar tested as well as your

adrenals. Taking thyroid meds can increase your

metabolism and if your adrenals are not up to par,

then you can get low blood sugar which can cause sweet

cravings. Just a thought ...

I found this from a recommendation of a friend at (

http://ww2.williams-sonoma.com/cat/pip.cfm )

I make my own ice cream and sorbets, you can too. Most of the time I

use fresh ingredients and organic milk, maybe some extracts, and plain

sugar. For sorbets I use plain juices, like grape, or kid's juices.

Very painless and effortless to use, and the results are fabulous.
