ASD or PDD-NOS

Hi All,

We had our visit from our aging and disability service last Friday. (I have had

a big weekend and can only get to the computer now, Sunday night)

He said something to me that I thought a bit strange and needed to see if you

guys have come across it. Especially when I see the earlier post about Semantics

& PDD NOS.

He explained his version of the spectrum etc. He said there was Autistic

disorder (classic or core Autism I guess) and ASD. He said ASD came about as PDD

NOS is no longer used and for kids that do not fit Autistic disorder then ASD

will be the dx.

Remembering I am in Australia and the terminology or the way dx's are labelled

may be different. I am just curious that's all as my understanding from what I

have read is that PDD NOS was if the child did not quite meet the levels for a

ASD dx?

By the way we are going to be booked in for a developmental assesment in a month

or two. So the ball is rolling that little bit more.

Also he said he has come across many kids that are developmentally delayed that

showed allot of Autistic characteristics. He then said that these

characteristics would be eventually lost and replaced with meaningful stuff. OK

then this is obviously not Autism but why does this happen as how can a child

show many signs and then be classified as not Autistic? Or do they go on to be

dx'd with something else?

I am just curious as it really does astound me that all these labels are around

and it so hard to get consistency from people. I am so confused.

Jen

(Who does not want to sound hung up on labels just VERY CONFUSED)
