Guest guest
Hello everyone, Some of you may remember how thrilled I was back in January after my visit to a doctor here in the UK who promised to give me my life back by the summer. At that time I was taking 100mcg of thyroxine and really struggling. Dr Skinner raised my thyroxine dose to 200mcg and at an appointment in April said that he would probably add in T3 at our next meeting in July. Having been on 200mcg for 3months I know that I do need a further adjustment in medication. Sadly there is now a huge complication. In the UK doctors are regulated by the General Medical Council. Most endocrinologists disagree with treating patients who have HypoT symptoms but whose test results are within normal range; there is also unease in these circles about prescribing Armour Thyroid. Dr Skinner does both. It seems that a senior endocrinologist has complained about Dr Skinner's treatment protocols and this lovely doc is summoned to appear before an Interim Orders Panel (a sort of disciplinary body)on Wednesday (tomorrow) 29th June. This notice appeared last week on the Thyroid UK website: ****************** URGENT! DR SKINNER NEEDS YOUR HELP! URGENT! Some of you may remember that Dr Peatfield was hounded by the GMC and particular doctors eventually got their way and Dr Peatfield retired. Unfortunately, the GMC have now called Dr Skinner to a Public Hearing on the 29th June 2005 to respond to allegations made by a senior endocrinologist . I am not totally sure of the exact allegations but I believe them to be in respect of his treatment protocol. http://www.thyroiduk.org/ ****************** The following information is posted on the General Medical Council's diary page. ****************** Reason for referral to IOP: inappropriate clinical practice including maintaining medication for patients at dangerous levels and failures of communication with other medical practitioners. http://www.gmcpressoffice.org.uk/apps/news/events/ ********************** Dr Skinner can be suspended for up to 18 months! He has 4000 patients, most of whom have gone to him after much suffering and lack of treatment under our National Health Service. I am clearly anxious for myself but there are thousands of us dependent on Dr Skinner's skill and knowledge in the treatment of this horrible condition. I am teaching again after being told that I would never work again. I am still very fatigued after a day in the classroom but I can't imagine being returned to the twilight zone I inhabited before I found Dr Skinner. If he is suspended and not successful in an appeal, then any other doctor tempted to treat other than by TSH results will feel inhibited by the risk of losing their livelihood too. The will take the same risk if they prescribe Armour Thyroid. I, like many others, have written to the General Medical Council in support of Dr Skinner So why am I posting this? Would those of you that pray please add this to your prayer list. Would everyone else focus their outrage on these people at the GMC who tomorrow will decide whether or not to suspend Dr Skinner. Maybe, although our bodies are weakened by thyroid disease, we can summon enough mental energy to change the blinkered compassionless approach that has made us, and keeps us ill. Those of you who might like to know a little more about Dr Skinner might like to look at his website http://www.thyroideducation.com I have to work tomorrow. I can't imagine how I'm going to concentrate knowing that my lifeline is about to be cut. I am hoping for, but not hopeful of, a miracle. __________________________________ Discover Yahoo!
