Guest guest
Hi Andy, I'm experiencing the same thing and thought I was the only one. I've been a strict vegetarian since I was 12, but since I've had IgAN I have been craving and eating chicken and steak like crazy!!! My husband gets a shocked look on his face too when we go out to a restaurant because I used to only eat salad and now I want the steak dinner with a side of shrimp and an order of buffalo chicken strips. I don't understand why, but it's nice to know it's not just me. Take care, Cheryl

Guest guest
Hi Andy, I don't know what your son's labs look like, but eating a high protein diet can be hard on the kidneys. You may want to check with his doctor though because protein is necessary for a growing boy too so it is a fine balance. Guest guest
I have been thinking about what may be causing the craving for meats... I've been vegetarian (nearly vegan) for over 7 years now, I've noticed the times when I crave meat what my body really seems to need is iron. Once I eat a few high iron foods like, for example, Malt O Meal my craving goes away just as quickly as it came. I wonder, in the cases here where people are craving meat, you really just might need something high in iron? My iron need is so common place around here now that when I tell my husband " man your burger smells good " he tells me " sounds like you need to eat something with iron in it. " Just a thought, perhaps some higher iron foods might curb the cravings for the high protein meat. Though if those craving it aren't restricted on protein intake by their doctors then it wouldn't be a major deal to eat it I guess. Amy Craving meats! > Haven't written in a while. Guest guest
You could be right about that Amy, because, re craving meat itself, what often happens is the opposite. People with advanced chronic renal insufficiency (CRI) tend to develop an aversion to meat - almost like the body is saying, " Don't eat all this meat, because I can't get rid of the waste products " . Plus, it may even taste funny because of changes to how we taste things as renal insufficiency progresses. Because of it, many people with advanced CRI do get depleted of iron stores in their body and may need a supplement. Perhaps, every once in a while, the body gives us a craving for it. Just speculating, but it makes sense. Many of you guys with mild IgAN and mild CRI want to anticipate being on a low protein maybe before it's really needed, but the fact is that, even if the nephrologists or dieticians didn't say a word about eating a special renal low protein diet, many (perhaps) most would instinctively not eat that much protein anyway. You just won't have the appetite for it, and you won't want to eat meat because " it tastes funny " . That's why so many people are already malnourished even before they start dialysis. Guest guest
Amy, I've been wondering if my body needs iron and that's why I have been craving meat after being a vegetarian for over 20 years. I've never worried about iron, but my labs showed I was borderline anemic. I wonder if that's connected. What other foods do you eat to get iron? Thanks. Guest guest
I remember that my son unfortunately still craved steaks even when his creatinine was above 6, but he would really pay for it if he indulged. Too much meat and he would vomit for about 12 hours afterwards. Perhaps the craving was related to his anemia, which tended to be unstable even with epo. After transplant you need extra protein to offset the muscle-wasting side effect of prednisone, so he was thrilled with that. Guest guest
Hi Pierre, I can attest to that. We picked up some deli turkey and made sandwiches and I kept insisting my meat was bad even though we just got back from the store. I eat less and less meat and I do often say things are tasting bad. Good to know it is not my cooking :-) I try to make sure I do get my allotted three ounces of protein though, but it is not always easy these days. Guest guest
Keep in mind that your doctor can easily tell if you need iron just from your regular bloodwork. and they know the first step to correcting anemia is ensuring you have enough iron. All the fancy EPO in the world doesn't work if you don't have enough iron. Pierre Re: Craving meats! > Amy, > > I've been wondering if my body needs iron and that's why I have been craving > meat after being a vegetarian for over 20 years. Guest guest
Cheryl, If you still eat eggs the yolks are a good iron source though you may have to watch the cholesterol, kale and collard greens are also high in iron but may need to be watched due to moderate potassium levels, dried beans and peas are also a good source of iron but again may need to be limited or avoided due to potassium restrictions if you have any, dandelion greens and broccoli are a good low potassium source of iron. I find Malt O Meal to be ideal due to it being low potassium, it provides 60% of your daily iron in one serving, and it seems to absorb into your system well...add some soy milk into that and you are looking at 66% of your daily intake. For people who can't stand the taste/texture of Malt O Meal they do have a really good muffin recipe on the side of the box so you can get your daily iron with a dollop of butter and jelly on it. ) The thing you have to watch with iron based foods is what you eat/drink with them. For example the tannins found in coffee or tea can bind with iron and not allow it to absorb into your system. Also the phytates found in whole wheat can do the same thing. Vitamin C helps with the absorption of iron...hence the squeeze of lemon juice onto your spinach for example...it helps the iron from the spinach absorb into your system. (spinach is very high in potassium though and may need to be avoided on a potassium restricted diet) I find if I eat a bowl of Malt O Meal a few times a week I tend to be find and have no cravings for meat at all. I also eat a lot of broccoli and some dried beans regularly. (the dietician had to find something for me to eat and gave into certain beans with lower potassium levels than others) Hope that helps. Guest guest
Amy, I like all the high-iron foods you mentioned, so I'll have to try them and see if I stop craving meat so much. I drink tea all day and I didn't know about its effect on iron in your food. I learn so much from this group! Thanks. Cheryl

Amy, do you happen to have those good protein filled vegetarian recipes on your computer that you could forward? I have been having a hard time eating meat, and perhaps something would sound better to me. Thanks!
