Hi Nan. I was the one that wrote to you several weeks ago explaining that I

lived in Norfolk, VA. I have a 20 month old son, , who has a

severe/profound loss. My husband and I explored many different communication

options when we discovered 's loss, and we met people using the different

methods. We started out doing Total Communication, but we also attended a

cued speech camp where we learned the whole system in a weekend. I know

someone in Hampton that uses cued speech and teaches it. Contact me if you

would like me to share the info.

TTC means trying to conceive. Another common one is DH (darling

husband) and AF (aunt flow). I believe there is a list somewhere in

the database, but it has been a while since I've checked.

I dont think its a dumb question.

You can obviously learn more about AV by going to

http://www.auditory-verbal.org/

After learning about the many different communication options

available to our daughter we have decided to use AV.

The best way Ive heard someone describe it is this. Think of

language education on a scale.

ASL is on one side and AV is on the other.

Between the two are many different ways of either using more or less

visual clues/listening skills to help learn language.

Obviously ASL no listening and AV all listening.

ASL all visual, AV no visual.

My daughter is learning to speak without reading lips, cueing, ASL

or any other visual technique. She is listening to how a word

sounds than repeating it. Sometimes she has to hear it a couple

times before she expresses it correctly. The cool thing is that she

has great listening skills. With her CII w/HIRES we are very

thankful that this is a possibility for her.

between auditory-oral and auditory-verbal communication? Or are

they the same?

Everyone needs at least 1200 cals a day for normal body function. The

best formula I have seen is take your GOAL body weight times 10 and

that should be minimum cals. So for example my goal weight is 160 X 10=

1600. If you are moderately active add 100 a day. If you exercise add

200. You should not go below because that will slow your metabolism and

make it harder to lose weight and you will lose muscle not fat and that

makes it harder to lose weight too. Also be sure to drink plenty of

water! The best formula for that is take your body weight in half and

that is how many ounces you should strive for. I know, that sounds like

a lot. That's why I say " strive " . Just work up gradually so you aren't

too hard on your kidneys.

Take care,

Gena

Thanks Gena, I know your post was to , but it helped me out

too. I've never heard a way to figure your calories that was

sooooooo easy. My goal weight is 126 and I exercise regularly, so I

guess I need 1460. I've been trying to eat just a little this week

to get this weight I've gained off. Pretty much I've just been

having an oatmeal for breakfast, a slimfast and banana for luch and

then a lite dinner, mainly veggies and fruit. According to what you

said, I probably froze my metabolism. Back to full fat yogurt

tomorrow and peanut butter. Maybe that well change it. Thanks

again, Meaghan

Hi Krista,

yes, IgAN does affect both kidneys equally unfortunately. If that was not

the case, IgAN would never result in reaching end stage renal failure because

one kidney is sufficient to maintain life.

As far as the swelling, edema is often present once your renal function is

fairly compromised. Do you happen to know what your level of kidney function

is?

I have never found a book on IgAN, but I can tell you that our sister site,

www.igan.ca is the most comprehensive source of information I have found

anywhere. You might want to read through that site.

Let us know if you have any further questions.

Usually in the morning, before you take your first or

daily dose ... test at least 12 hours after dosing

(others correct me if I'm wrong here) -- so as to get

a clear picture of how your body is doing ...

Hi,

For me, in order to be consistant with my multiple testings, I

followed the steps that my first endo recommended...

Fast for 12 hours, water is allowed, no coffee, tea allowed. Hold the

pills until after the draw.

Then have the blood drawn roughly the same time of day...for me it

was/is always around 8am..as I worked swing shift at the time.

Not everyone agrees with the fast, not everyone agrees with having

the blood drawn at the same time...however for me, it works and the

tests are always run under the bodies similar conditions.
