Guest guest
Hi Christi; I am 36 and I've had Achalasia for 11 years now. If you read back in the archives, you'll find a lot of personal histories. The barium swallow is useless now according to my Doctor. An endoscopy is the best way to show the condition of the esophagus. A manometry is brutal so ask for an endoscopy as an alternative. You already know your peristalsis muscles don't work so don't have a tube stuck up your nose and down to your stomach to tell you something you already know! ( Yeah, I've had that just so the Doctor could tell me I was right ). The dilatations help some people but I haven't had any success. (Some call it dilations ). I'd like to stay up and fill you in on some "do's and don'ts" but it's midnight now. I'm sure you will get a lot of advice tomorrow. I truly hope you have a supportive family. ( My parents still have a hard time inviting me for dinner. They don't understand why I have to walk around when my Mom goes to all the trouble of cooking a fancy meal ... They blame me for not enjoying dinner and ruining everyone else's by rudely walking away ). My husband and three girls are the greatest though. If I wasn't so tired, you would learn my life story, but I wish you well. ( Thunder Bay, Ontario ) New member here. Hello. My name is Christi. I am 33 and was just told of this disease today. I'm a little ticked right now that it took so many years to find it. I told my dr. 4 YEARS ago that my peristalsis muscles quit working and she didn't believe that. So, forgive me, but, I am a bit peeved right now. So, I'm really REALLY new to all of this and my gastro dr was talking about surgeries and cancer and swallowing and barium swallows and all of this stuff, so, I'm a little overwhelmed right now. Anyone have any advice or comments or suggestions for me? Thank you!!ChristiNebraska
Guest guest
Christie, I live in Nebraska also. Omaha area. I've had A since 1987 and I am 35yrs. I have had all the procedures done and some of them twice. The surgury was done by completly opening you up back then. You have a lifetime of achalasia to deal with and sometimes its easier then others. My suggestion is to be open about the disease because it's not anything that you'll be able to figure out. I know it sounds bad when you listen to all of the postings, but I've been able to have a great life with it. It seens to all work out in the end. Let me know where you live and I hope all will get better with you soon. Kerry Nebraka
Guest guest
hello everyone. i am new to this group becuase my son is going for his helmet fitting next week. his name is and he is 8 months old. The decision for us to go ahead with the helmet was tough because his case is pretty mild but we can see it and the doctor recommended it. we figured its now or never, and i dont want to look back one day and say " we should have done it " i doubt we'll ever look back and say " we shouldnt have done it " i was wondering if anyone knows of decorating tips or of anyone who paints the helmet for you. i live in nj so if anyone knows of someone in nj who does this please let me know....thank you in advance. its nice to be a part of a group with as many members as this for support. thanks again. Guest guest
Nope, sorry! We live near Charlote, NC. I found an artist through a friend of a friend. The CT here also has cards for artists who have painted bands. Most of the people who do it here mainly seem to do murals and children's nurseries and bands as a sideline. > > > hello everyone. i am new to this group becuase my son is > going > > for > > > his helmet fitting next week. his name is and he is 8 > > months > > > old.
