Guest guest
Hello Rick, Just getting caught up reading posts, and was so disappointed to read that you are having fit issues with 's Starband! I sincerely hope this new band will be just right for him. Please keep us posted! It's great that there will not be a big gap of time until he gets his new band. As an aside, I just wanted to point out that there are over 20 unique brands of bands and helmets that are FDA approved. A local helmet from NOPCO is not one of the ones listed, which may be of interest from a standpoint of insurance coverage as they often require an FDA approved product. Take care, Christie (Mom to Repo'd Remy) > > > > > > Went to NOPCO today to have 's Starband adjusted to > > alleviate > > > the red spots that we noticed on Saturday. Guest guest
I would not put the band on him if it isn't fitting good. I also recommend asking for to see some before and after results with this " nopco band " . There is also Hasbro childrens in Providence who makes Starbands but doesnt modify them. They use the better foam and the fit is excellent. And there is always cranial tech too. A bit of a drive, but well worth it. It is your child's head. We saw first hand what a bad fitting band can do. Guest guest
Rick, The lady, who posted this went to Rusty she knows what she's talking about. His ill fitting NOPCO band made her daughter's head worse. How long has Rusty been banding babies who are 3 months old? It must be fairly recent as he wasn't banding babies who were under 5-6 months old. I hope you don't think we're picking on you!! We just want you to be fully informed. This is your baby we're talking about. -- In Plagiocephaly , " " <angembal@...> wrote: > > I would not put the band on him if it isn't fitting good. Guest guest
I hear you and I do understand where you seem to be coming from. Is it just NOPCO or is there something I am missing? I am having a great deal of difficulty finding any other outside information about experiances with NOPCO, Starband or anything else aside from the information posted here. TRUST ME, I have my ire up about have a new home made band. I will be speaking with the doctor before we go back to NOPCO on Thursday to get his thoughts on the subject. If he doesn't like what is going on I will pull the plug on NOPCO, if he reassures me that this is not a problem then I WILL be asking for some before and after photos of treated children. Also there is the insurance issue as Rusty did inform me that their band is not yet FDA approved however they are working on that. I completly understand all of your concern and I appreciate you all looking out for my son's best interest. It is amazing to me that you all put so much time and effort into looking into the well being of complete strangers children. I guess that is what a support group is there for in the end. I do believe that Rusty (and therefore NOPCO) have my son's best interest in mind and at heart. (who had great success with NOPCO) liked Rusty however her child was treated mostly in the Burlington office, not the Boston office. I will keep the board posted as we travel this road. Can anyone here share their experiances with Hasbro Childrens and StarBand? I'm guessing that will be where we go if we pull the plug on NOPCO. FYI, I've posted a pic of getting casted, he was really cute! Thank you all again, Rick 's daddy. > > > > > > > > > > > > Went to NOPCO today to have 's Starband adjusted to > > > > > alleviate > > > > > > the red spots that we noticed on Saturday. Guest guest
Hi Rick, It's not just NOPCO, it's also the fact that his band ISN'T FDA approved. It also has to do with the fact that Rusty himself is responsible for making a baby's head worse! Then when the parent posted to us about it, he basically threatened her. It's all in the archives if you'd like me to pull them up and post them for you. It also has to do with the fact that your baby is SO young. It also has to do with the fact that he's told other parents he won't band a baby until 5-6 months. Now he's banding a 3 month old with a helmet that isn't FDA approved. Rick, it's posts like yours that make me want to walk away from this group and never come back. In the same breath it's posts like yours that keep me coming back. I don't want another parent to go through the hell went through at NOPCO. Let me ask you a question to try and get some perspective. Would you be willing to take a drug that may or may not make you well, but could also make you worse? This drug isn't yet FDA approved therefore no one knows what the ramifications could be. I know you feel comfortable with Rusty and that's a good thing. But you really, really need to think about letting him put a helmet on your son's tiny head that isn't FDA approved. Let me ask you this, if Rusty taught Orthomerica how to make bands, how come his band isn't FDA approved and their's is? You have a huge advantage over , she didn't know what was in store for her daughter. We had heard some negative things about NOPCO but nothing as bad as what happened to her daughter. I know as a moderator of this group I shouldn't say this but I'm going to, PLEASE DON'T LET NOPCO PUT ANYTHING ON YOUR SON'S HEAD! Rick, I'm pleading with you, don't do it. I know this probably sounds dramatic, it's meant to. We have had WAY TOO MANY baby's heads become more deformed b/c of ill fitting bands and inexperienced orthos. I do believe your baby is the youngest of them all. If your son wasn't so young and his head wasn't so soft still, I wouldn't be freaking out like this. We have babies here who are now toddlers, children whose heads are STILL messed up and always will be. Because of an ill fitting band/helmet and or an inexperienced ortho. Please give some serious thought about putting a helmet on your son that isn't FDA approved. As always keep us posted. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Went to NOPCO today to have 's Starband adjusted > to > > > > > > alleviate > > > > > > > the red spots that we noticed on Saturday. Guest guest
Rick, I am going to back up on this one. As moderators we try to be as impartial as possible only supplying the facts. NOPCO scares me. 's daughter got worse in her NOPCO band. I'm not even sure the 2 subsequent bands corrected all of the issues created by the NOPCO modifications. Not only that but the treatment of by NOPCO was inexcusable. Your son is soooo young and has such a soft head. An ill fitting band could do irreversible damage. A well fitted STARband, Hanger, or DOC band in the hands of an experienced (and successful) ortho will work wonders in a short time on a young infant. Not all experience is good experience. Some orthos with 10, 15, 20 years still have no clue and others with 1-2 years are just " naturals " . When we chatted on Friday I said the band looked good from the outside. Now that I know it caused red marks I'm a bit shocked and worried about what's on the inside - i.e. the underlying scan/cast. I'm even more shocked to know that Rusty is going to put a homemade, non-FDA approved band on your son. I think it is very wise for you to discuss this with the prescribing dr. I just hope he can be open minded. Good luck and please keep us posted. Also, continue taking all those pictures - first is adorable and second it provides a very vivid record. Get some of the red marks with time stamps on them. mom to na, 2 1/2 DOC Grad, Feb 04 Kiersten, 8 months, DOC 1/10/06 www.thefilyaws.com > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Went to NOPCO today to have 's Starband adjusted > > to > > > > > > > alleviate > > > > > > > > the red spots that we noticed on Saturday. Guest guest
Rick, I hate to blunt, but let me just say the writing's on the wall here. Rusty doesn't seem to want to take responsibility for anything. He scans your son for a STARband. The STARband comes in and Rusty fits him. When you go back and he can't seem to get it to not cause problems then he says the scan isn't reliable and his homemade band is better. Well, if he felt that way why didn't he cast and suggest this band in the first place. Seriously it sounds like he's just covering his tracks. How did he know it didn't fit at the fitting if he's so experienced. Call the FDA and your Congressman to ask if a product can be used while it is in the process of being FDA approved. I kind of think I remember that the companies had to cease treatment until the studies were completed. Maybe I am wrong. Is being used a part of the trial? If so, then he truly is a guinea pig. If my child were getting this care I would discontinue treatment immediately. People don't get a second chance to deform my kids. Try the other providers spoke of. No treatment is going to be better than making things worse. He is way too young to have someone experimeting on him. You really need someone with experience and a proven product. Guest guest
I just spoke with Doctor office. They COMPLETLY support NOPCO, they feel that the in house made bands are BETTER then the Starband in every way shape and form. They feel that Rusty is one of the best OT's at NOPCO and have no reservations whatsoever about what is going on with my son. I appreciate all of your feedback, I really do and I thank you. I've been emailing off list with so I have some of her story direct. I will not hestitate to pull the plug on this if I'm not comfortable with it as it moves forward but please, give it a chance. I will tell you that after reading a lot of the recent posts about my son, my wife and I have been very concerned. I feel very comfortable with the information I've received from Dr. office and will be proceeding as planned. Your support is appreciated again. Guest guest
Laying on the back of the cast before it is COMPLETELY dry is going to mishapen it, altering the cast and giving an incorrect example of the head for the helmet to be made. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Went to NOPCO today to have 's Starband > adjusted > > > to > > > > > > > > alleviate > > > > > > > > > the red spots that we noticed on Saturday. Guest guest
Rick, A cast cannot be completely set and come off the baby's head(there has to be some softness to pull it away in general terms)....unless it was cut off by a cast removing saw. So laying on a semi set up cast will cause a flattening of the back of the cast inside and therefore not give a correct mold. My son was casted four times during the course of his treatment and it was an absolute that he remain upright until the cast was semi set and removed just for that reason. Guest guest
Rick, I am glad that you are being cautious. My sincere wish for you is that this in house band is wonderful and gives the correction he needs. I do want you to remember that the doctors you are speaking with only refer to this place and would therefor have no problem with them. Aren't these doctors affiliated with the hospital which houses the facility? My prayers will be that 's new band is a perfect fit and you have the best possible treatment and outcome. We do love our plagio babies!! Good Luck!
