Thought everyone would want

to read this update from ’s Caringbridge web site. Barb in Texas

I

won't be going to town today for my scheduled appointment

or labs. My mother had a stroke following surgery to clean out her carotid

artery yesterday. She has good motor control, but her language center was

effected and she's having trouble finding the right word to say. I'll be

dealing with that situation and following up with town later. I'm itchy and probably not

looking the best, but I'm hanging in here. Gotta run - it is a long drive to

UVA from here!

Love,

Dear ,

I hope that things are improving for your mom. Why does everything have to happen at once? Here's praying that both mom and you will start feeling better soon.

Hi all -

Mom's doing much better. They sent her home yesterday with

instructions for Dad to set up in-home speech therapy appointments

to help her with word retrieval. She's saying a lot more and making

more sense. It gets tough when the words aren't used often or if the

context is difficult. One of our cousins says that she's never heard

of a coratid clean out that didn't result in a stroke. Well, the

docs hadn't said the risk was THAT high. I'm relieved that was all

that was effected - she has full motor control and otherwise thinks

fine. She can write whatever she wants because she is left handed,

so I'm not worried about any situation where she's desparate to find

her words - she's got a back-up.

I'm doing all right. My itching is a little improved this morning,

and I have managed to sleep the last few nights after two long trips

to UVA (150 miles one-way) and a trip to town (for my labs).

I've been trying hard to take care of myself as well as everyone

else. My sinuses have managed to improve a bit despite wearing

myself out. I have a little boy who is very upset that we don't have

the healthiest foods in the house (I received a lecture on this

while I fixed his snack for school), and a husband whom I've barely

seen all week. Boy am I looking forward to this weekend?!

I should get off of here in case my coordinator calls with my lab

results and answers to my questions from the note I left her

yesterday...Thanks for checkin' in everybody. I'm really handling

things pretty well. After this past year, what's one MORE thing?!

Love,

(Deb in VA)
