Guest guest
You know, I¡Çm with Jeri lyn here, I can¡Çt do it. Maybe I¡Çm not desperate yet, only being 6 days post op, but I can¡Çt bring myself to blend anything and drink it. I¡Çm getting tired of the boost, ensure and carnation instant breakfast and the cream soups, but doesn¡Çt it just look gross when you blend all that stuff together? I know, I¡Çm being silly, but I¡Çll let you know when I crack and do it!! :-) Re: Depressed and Angry Hi, Listen to Sissy Cammie here! Amazing what you can blend and make palatable if you just don't look at it. I think the key is mood lighting and a sense of humor. My fave was mexican food.....mucho flavor, fat and protein which was very satisfying....I would take an entire enchillada dinner with extra sour cream, guacamole and salsa and whip it in the blender...rice, beans and all till it was smooth and suckable....or spoonable with a baby spoon...no chunks big enough to choke on. A lovely margarita, some classic spanish guitar, good company and an after dinner bubble bath. Recovery isn't that bad!!!!! Well as long as you don't have to testify in court or talk yourself out of a speeding ticket.....talking is hysterical at best.....try talking dirty to your sweetie with that splint in...it's like cartoon foreplay! Whhheeeee......I miss that! Good luck to you, Cyn > > Thanks for the encouragement, > > > > I have no idea what lymph drainage massage is, but I think I heard > someone else on the list talk about it once. Guest guest
Naah, at least not in my opinion. If soup doesn't look gross, why would anything else pureed look gross? I think the way to wrap your brain around it as to start by putting your soup in the blender and maybe a little bit of the yummy barbecue chicken the rest of the family is eating. And it makes the soup taste so much better that you want a second helping, but the soup is almost gone so you put more chicken in and less soup. And then you start jealously eyeballing the salad everyone else is eating, and wonder how well it will blend. Then you try it because you want to get more roughage in to combat the irregularity that comes from having been in the hospital, and you find that it blends really well because there's so much liquid in the lettuce & tomatoes and cucumbers and doesn't taste bad at all. Next thing you know you're blending tuna sandwiches and you don't care what it looks like or who sees you do it, because you feel so much better eating normal food! Guest guest
Honey, hunger meets frustration -- and hunger wins. So, if it looks yukky, don't look. Just drink! Meantime, yogurt, in those squeeze things. Smashed potatoes, mixed with cream and broth... And gravy... Whatever... Refried beans and cheese and salsa, with some mexican rice and more salsa are also tasty... Good wishes. Cammie > You know, I¡Çm with Jeri lyn here, I can¡Çt do it. Guest guest
Hi girl, That was my point about mood lighting and a sense of humor. Yes, it looks like vomit...but removed from that.....it tastes like what it is.....close your eyes...use your imagination...imagine you are in space injecting space buffet at zero gravity! It can be fun! Start small with instant flavored oatmeal or pasta with extra sauce...mashed potatoes with extra everything to make them creamy and satisfying. I would mis mashed potaoes, gravy and black eyed peas with a fork....and mush them in.....yummy. The key is to adapt as much of the foods you love and enjoy as possible. With imagination and creativity you can survive without feeling too deprived. I actually gained weight during my long recovery!!!! I ate as much rich fattening food as I wanted.....something i would never do otherwise. You can do it....be bold! Guest guest
Hi Jeri-Lynn, I'm sure you've thought of this too, but are you sleeping propped up? Taking it easy? Doing too much can cause swelling, even after 5 weeks, as I discovered. As Cammie said, bruising will go down eventually. Mine lasted quite awhile, and turned some cool colours as it went away. I probably should have contacted Nike to do some commercial work, as I had their copyrighted swoosh under both eyes. I have no idea why I bruised up there, except that I do have luggage-sized bags under my eyes on my best days. As for the lymph drainage therapy, go to this site and click on MLD in the left hand side of the page http://www.geocities.com/orthognathicinfo/ It will tell you a lot about MLD therapy. At the bottom of this link there will be a link to the Vodder site in North America. You can search for a therapist in your area. You could also call massage therapists in your area and ask if they are Vodder-trained. Mine was, and teaches the technique to others, but doesn't advertise on the Vodder site. This is not like massage therapy - the strokes are very gentle, and are intended to get your lymph network opened up and working again. The shock of the surgery tends to shut things down, more in some people than in others. Think of a garden hose, what happens if you bend it? That's what's happening in your system. Make sure you have the therapy sitting up, until your surgeon gives you the go-ahead to sleep laying down. Hang in there! I know it's hard to be patient, but honestly, this stuff is going to go away and pretty soon you'll be oohing and ahhing over the changes. Guest guest
Well, I hope you're sitting down (and upright) for this one. Yes, I think you should not have been sleeping flat. I've heard of others who have slept flat (and thought it a bit odd) who didn't have problems. It's not too late to correct for that if it's the problem. You might still consider some MLD therapy if things don't improve - it's never too late according to my MLD therapist. She showed me diagrams to explain how the fluids & toxins drain through the lymph network. They drain from the face into the neck, and from there through the collarbone area to the heart. They can't drain if you're laying flat. You may have noticed that you have more swelling in the morning, I'd be surprised if you haven't. The very best thing I found for propping myself up in bed (at 45 degrees is what was suggested to me) was a bed pillow - something with arms. I put a few smaller cushions in it to get the proper angle and back support. I slept this way (and sat with it during the day) for at least 2 weeks until my surgeon cleared me to sleep flat. I'm surprised that your surgeon or the nurses at hospital didn't advise you about this. Don't fret about it, it's just going to take you a little bit longer than normal for the swelling to go down. Guest guest
HI Cammie, so good to see that you are still active on the board! Jeri Lyn, I was wired shut for 4 weeks after my surgery 17 months ago. If you eat what you want when you want you will get through it without too much deprivation. Cammie has give you much good advice about blended food and given you some good suggestions about what to eat. I can count on one hand how many Ensures I drank during recovery. My main diet was fruit smoothies, milk shakes with peanut butter and banana and refried beans, sour cream and cheese. Mix the refried beans with some enchilada sauce and chicken broth and blend to get through a straw. If my family was eating it I ate it! Did you know that because of the peas, tuna casserole is green when it is blended? I also ate enchiladas, tacos, Hungarian goulash, Top Ramen with egg, mashed potatoes and gravy and anything else I could throw in the blender and add some broth or milk. Another favorite was liquid yogurt like Nourishe. Even after I was unwired I couldn't get my jaw open very far and would often eat from a straw for the the week or so after the wires came out. I lost 13 pounds in the first 2 weeks and then none after that. Once I was off of all meds I ate whenever I wanted and didn't have any trouble finding things that I liked. It was easier than I thought it would be and I hope it is that way for you as well. > > You know, I¡Çm with Jeri lyn here, I can¡Çt do it. Guest guest
Hi Jeri-Lynn, It's not easy sleeping upright, but I think it will help. I remember my face hurt when I slept flat. Happy healing!
