I appreciate the reassurance from your experience, both with doubts beforehand and how it feels afterward. The book recommendations will be very helpful to me. I will keep you posted as I learn more about the foster parenting options locally and the adoption options for us as an older couple (as I know there are a couple of other women in my age range in this group). The last 3 years show me over and over how much I really love children and how important they are to me. While I regret that the losses in my early 20s were so great that I couldn't let myself see how important that was to me, long run, I think I will look back on this 3 years as a gift of allowing me to bring my life back onto a path of great importance to me. But, it will be a whole lot easier to say that when I can look back rather than right now when I'm not sure where I will end up with this.
