Re: Chemical exposure anyone?

This has been discussed numerous times in the past. I doubt if there's anyone

(PSC or not) that doesn't have some story about chemical exposure.

Bottom line - need more data.

Has anyone else researched any chemicals they may have been exposed to? Any

chemical experts out there? Thanks.

Hi Stuart, I can't believe that you are thinking the same thing I am about chemical exposure! My husband was diagnosed with PSC in 2000 and has worked in a pharmaceutical company for over 20 years handling formaldehyde and other serious chemicals. We asked his physician about the possibility of chemicals causing the disease and he said he could not say 100% that it was not a possibility but they thought the disease was more genetic than environmentally caused. I still have serious doubts. Keep me informed as to your findings and I will do the same. Good luck to you. I realize there is no definitive cause for PSC, but as they say, 'for every action.......' The only thing I could come up with was a chemical I used every day at work for about two years several years ago('89 -'90). It was something called Trichloroethane (type of solvent). At the time I did not know what an MSDS was (Material Safety Data Sheet). Every day for those two years I had my hands in this stuff off and on all day. I've since researched it and found that it is absorbed through the skin and can cause serious Liver damage. As Arne pointed out, most modern Americans have been exposed to multiple chemicals. The application for the Mayo study asked about chemical exposure, so I assume they are investigating the correlation of PSC and chemical exposure. I think they were focused on agricultural chemicals, but I might be in error. I also don't know if that study is still accepting participants, I suggest everyone who has confirmed PSC participate in such studies. All it took was filling out an extensive questionnaire and a blood test.

Take Care

exposure.

We

keep trying to come up with an answer, some common ground we can all point to,

but I doubt it’s ever going to happen.

IMHO the cause is

within us, not what has or hasn’t happened to our bodies from the outside. We “think” Ken’s

PSC started in 1991 at the age of 17, he was never exposed to harsh chemicals. I doubt Q, Todd, , , , or

were either. It’s inside us,

a missing, too much or damaged something.

Hi Barb,

I agree, we do keep trying to come up with an answer, because we must.

When Joe was diagnosed at age 14, we found that several children in our small geographical area (The Woodlands, Texas), also had a recent diagnosis of IBD, either Crohn's or UC. At that time (1987), many of us mothers wondered if there was a chemical and/or environmental component. The answer to the question was never pursued to my knowledge.

I have thought of chemical exposure too. The MSDS of the chemicals I

worked with for a few years does not mention liver damage at all though. In

your case I would try to get some more information since it might be a lead

why you came down with PSC.

I have also considered my medication for juvenile epilepsy. The interesting

thing is that my sister has UC and also had juvenile epilepsy medication.

But all the experts I spoke to tell me that the kind of medication I took

(ethosuximide) is not considered to be harmfull to the liver. My sister had

different medication alltogether (carbamazepine and valproic acid)

I just found a MSDS for my epilepsy medication (something I have tried

before but did not find) and it has an interesting phrase in it.

May cause gastrointestinal disturbances. May affect behavior/central

nervous system (somnolence, ataxia), and respiration (dyspnea), and liver.

May cause periorbital edema, and Proteinuria.

It apparently also increases libido.

I think in the MSDS they are referring to different situations (exposure, fire,

ingestion of the material itself in its pure form) than when you take it as

medicine though.

Hi all, This matter of chemical exposure was discussed here a few years ago. At first I thought I hadn't but then remembered my dad saying that a few years before we moved to the farm he'd purchased from his parents' estate, there was a major spill of herbicide over the well outside the back door. The grass all died and they covered the area w/ a stone patio! I wouldn't think much of it except that both grandparents who lived there died of some kind of stomach and colon cancer. Both my mother and my younger sister died of colon cancer. Mother was 57 and Sue was 38! I developed this PSC and have wondered if there was a connection. I also have UC. I lived there less time than any of them. We moved there in Jan. of my senior year of high school I left that next Aug. for college at ASU and never really lived there again except for summmers and a couple of weeks at Christmas until 1967 when I was married. So I don't really know if there's a connection but

it is suspicious to me! Peggy McGdx UC - 1989dx PSC  - 1990listed 2/01
