Guest guest
Most of the generation II and III scanners are pretty good. It really depends on what type of systems are in your listening area (Conventional - Low, UHF, VHF versus Trunked - 800,900 Mhz). You can also try scannerworld.com out of NY for some pretty decent prices. When I say generation II and III, you want a scanner that is a " trunk tracker " that can follow trunked frequencies and lock in on one channel (talkgroup ID). Programming these things will probably require somebody who is experienced in doing it. Once you learn how to do it, it's not that hard. Good luck. Guest guest
The other thing to make sure of is that the trunked system can be monitored with the scanner you are considering. The scanners you mentioned will not monitor digital systems. APCO-25 digital systems can be monitored by the Radio Shack Pro-96 and the Uniden BC296 and BC796. EDACS ProVoice (as used by San for example) cannot be monitored by any currently marketed scanner. -Wes Ogilvie, EMT-B, JD

Guest guest
Wes, you're right. I forgot about that. Some other systems such as ASTRO digital can't be monitored either. Most digital such as EF , EDAC, son, etc can be monitored with what's out there. This e-mail is confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual(s) to whom it is addressed. Guest guest
The old ASTRO VSELP protocol can't be monitored. I'm not aware of any systems in Texas with that protocol. As for E.F. , only the " regular " LTR can be monitored, not Multinet or Passport. And as for EDACS, analog EDACS is monitorable, but not the digital Provoice or AEGIS. A great reference for all of this can be found at www.radioreference.com -Wes

Guest guest
What about transmitting on channel 12 instead of 19. Can that be monitored? :-) Just a joke folks. I think in todays world of communications you have to have a degree from the military to understand the lingo. When I started in 1979 I think we were still using CB's.
