Guest guest
Hi Becca, I had upper/lower/genio. My ortho recommended only lower. My surgeon wanted to do all three (possibly the genio as I had a strong chin). I dithered about this too. In the end, I decided to let the surgeon decide as he had more experience - even my ortho said that he deals with only a couple of surgical cases a year, but my surgeon deals with a lot! My pics are on site 2 under Fiddlesticks folder. I don't think you'll see a heckuva lot of difference in the chin in these photos, but I do have a ceph xray that shows my chin before it got reduced and slid forward. On the geocities site, I believe I do have links to sites that show diagrams of how genioplasty is done, and before/after pics. Click on OTHER LINKS, then ORTHOGNATHIC SURGERY LINKS at http://www.geocities.com/orthognathicinfo/ As for recovery, none of it wasn't painful at all. the genio didn't make recovery any easier or worse, but I do have a bit of residual numbness in my chin - nothing that I couldn't live with if I had to (I also have a spot on my lower lip as well). I was careful not to bump my chin or put pressure on it postop (I do yoga, and some postures require you to put your chin on the floor, so I didn't do those or modified the posture). I will admit that my chin felt funny for a few months, though, it was completely numb in the beginning, and that's a weird feeling. One of the final thoughts that made me decide to have " the works " was that I didn't want to have a separate surgery for the genio later if I needed it for aesthetic reasons (not the reason I did any of this, but all of a sudden it was a consideration) - I wanted to get everything over at once. Best of luck!

Guest guest
See my pics under " Mark upper and lower " . The ortho recommended genio but I didn't have it done and am happy with the results. Guest guest
i opted to have genio along with my BSSO. i am very glad that i did. i am still pretty swollen...just two weeks post-op, but i can see my new chin emerging as the swelling goes down. i posted pictures (joan). the chin procedure added about an hour to my procedure and my surgeon said i would have a bit more numbness for a while. i am still very numb on my chin, but very, very tingly 24/7 which is a good sign that the nerve is healing. best to you, joan

Guest guest
Hi Becca, I had upper/lower and genio one month ago to correct an open bite. Before the surgery, I had somewhat of a recessed chin. During my pre- surgery consult my surgeon said that he might have to do a genio if he was unable to bring my chin forward enough on its own. I told him to use his judgement and do whatever he felt was necessary. Turns out that he did give me a genio, however i didnt even know it was there until a few weeks ago when i asked him! My chin was not in pain whatsoever. My swelling is still pretty bad, so i am not happy yet with my overall face, but i do like my new chin ! So I say go for it if your surgeon recommends it. Also, my insurance paid for the procedure. Maybe yours will too? Let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck!! Guest guest
Becca, I had lower setback + genio 11 days ago. My surgeon did the following to determine whether or not I needed genio: 1) A trace was made of my profile along with the relative position of my jaws bones 2) Some calculations were made to determine how much my lower jaw had to be moved back 3) The trace was redrawn with the jaw moved to correct position and the trace of my profile was adjusted to compensate for the jaw movement 4) From this trace, it was clear that my chin would be recessed and another calculation was done to determine how much of my chin should be moved forward to compensate. I think this is pretty standard procedure. Perhaps you can ask your surgeon to see these traces. The changes to my face were actually quite subtle and I am very happy with the 'new' profile. good luck, on
