Where do they 'roost'?? I wanted to get some at one time, but hubby said they'd roost up on my roof. I have a dark green roof and don't wanna see bird-like droppings on it. There were guinneas at one of the barns that we boarded at in Kentucky. They were cute. How many do you have... and do they reproduce a lot? hugs, janet

Guest guest
Ours just roost in the trees around here - I've never seen them up on my roof LOL - we had 4 of them, but dogs, coyotes or something got 2 of them - now we're just down to the 2. If you do get guineas - you want to be sure to get them in pairs of 2 - they always stay together - this is how they fight off the snakes, and other critters. It's hard for them to reproduce if they are roaming around, because they make their nests in tall grass and there are so many "dangers" out there to get their eggs before they are hatched. We've never had any little baby guineas for this reason. But if you wanted them to reproduce you'd probably have to set up a nest for them in captivity. Somewhere around here I have a great little book on raising guineas, written by a lady who lives in Bandera...or Boerne...one of those little Texas towns with a "B" LOL Melody Moris, Leader TOPS #Tx1454, Pleasanton http://www.texastops.org email: topsmama@... Guest guest
I have 19 guineas, they roost in the trees, however, they tried to roost on my front porch at first. We had to run them away from the house and then they started roosting in a tree near the house. All you have to do is run them away just before the sun goes down, they wont fly in the dark. We got them when they were a few weeks old kept them in a cage outside near a tree and then let them go when they had all their feathers and could fly. To raise them, we steal the eggs from the hen, providing we can find a nest and put them in an incubator. Snakes, dogs, coyotes and skunks seem to get the eggs. We did have one that had 6 hatch, but a few days later the chicks were gone. We had one(Fluffy) that we hatched in the house with a light bulb and when it came time to turn him loose, he didn't want to be a bird and the others would not accept him in their territory. He followed us everywhere, to the swimming pool, walking, I mean everywhere. When we left in the car, he waited by the door. He would let the kids hold him, pet him, and would even come in the house. It was funny! When we swam, he stood on the edge of the pool and the kids put him in the water a few times; He actually swam. We could not get rid of this bird. Then 4 strays came to stay and he started running with them. It took around two years for him to become a bird he thought he was one of us. I do know of a lady that keeps hers in shed at night. They come to feed and she locks them up. -----Original Message-----From: TexasTOPS [mailto:TexasTOPS ] On Behalf Of Melody MorisSent: Thursday, August 04, 2005 11:08 AMTo: TexasTOPS Subject: RE: guinneas Ours just roost in the trees around here - I've never seen them up on my roof LOL - we had 4 of them, but dogs, coyotes or something got 2 of them - now we're just down to the 2.
