I don't think the helmet will hurt, and it may keep him from getting

any worse. The assymetry is likely at least partially from the tort.

My son was mild-moderate and it did help the assymetry somewhat

(especially his forehead bossing). Even the sloping side of his head

(tort side) that was caused by the tort looked quite a bit better

after his helmet. The sloping really isn't considered plagio, but the

helmet kept him from flattening that side further. I couldn't see the

pictures so I don't know if this is the case with your son, but like I

said, I don't see the helmet causing any problems.

Hello! I think you are making the right choice getting the helmet.

What have you got to lose? My son 8 months also has tort. and is in

Physical Therepy. He goes once a week(we do stretches at home too)

and after about 3 weeks we've seen a huge difference! He holds his

head much straighter and will turn and sleep(occasionally) on the

side he wouldn't before. He also has positional plagio and has a

Clarren helmet. We just got it two weeks ago and the backside of his

head is almost round! It hasn't done much for his forehead, but the

Dr. said at this point it might not since it's harder bone. I haven't

noticed any improvment with the placement of his ears(which are WAY

off) but it's still pretty early. I'm hopeful. I'm glad we did the

helmet though, it pretty much use it or lose it.

You're doing the right thing! Trust yourself! Have a good day and

good luck!

Hi ,

You are doing everything you can for your son - that's all that

matters. Like the others have said, if nothing else, you will keep

it from worsening. I think we all feel like, " Gee, I wish we

would've done this sooner. " But just remember, we do the best we

can. We started the process in September and couldn't get her even

into physical therapy until December - I was SO frustrated!!! My

Bella is still having trouble with her tort - and I feel so bad

because I just don't have time to do the stretches like we're

supposed to - but still, we just have to do the best I can.

On the other side of this, I'm sure you will be glad you made this

decision - it helps after they get it on and don't even know it's

there!

Good luck, and always remember that we Plagio parents are here to

support you!

Take care,

April, Mom to Bella, 7 1/2 months, DOC 1/4/06, polis, MD

If he does then actually I would make sure that your ortho has a TON

Can you post the pictures or link to them on shutterfly?

Yea he has metopic cranio. You can see the ridge in his forehead. I just think it runs in our family. I have a slight ridge, my oldest has a very big one and now my baby does.

What did the neurosurgeon say about banding him?

If I were you I wouldn't do it unless the neuro and the ortho were

really on board together and the ortho had extensive training

working with metopic cranio. The results could be devastating.

My son developed a ridge but he was older than yours. He had

already graduated 4 months prior.

My plastic surgeon and ped ok'd the helmet. I am not using a neuro right now because he is developing fine. So it is more of a cosmetic thing to a neuro. I didnt even think he would be in it. The ortho said it was ok there are alot of kids with a ridge. I get the helmet on the 10th and see the doctor on the 21st to make sure everything is ok. I have one of the best surgeons in NY if not the country. He does amazing work. I trust him. I saw a neuro and he said nothing at all is wrong with my son. His eyes were ok. The ears were ok. He also said there was no tilt in his neck. I about ripped the mans head off. He wouldnt even look at the catscan. Every question I asked he blew off. I dont think he ever deals with cranio, plagio or tort. I think he is just a neuro not any kind os "specialist" in kids. If you see the catscan you can see there is something wrong. Can you tell he pissed me off lol.

It is metopic synostosis in case you want to look it up.

Welcome to Dr. T. Goodrich website . Here is a good site. You have to click on surgery.. A metopic ridge doesnt mean surgery unless later on in life you want to get rid of it for cosmetic reasons. The metopic closes the earliest out of the sutures. It close between 1-3 years give or take a few. The other sutures close alot later. I think it is just in my family that the metopic closes early. If your sons head looks like a triangle, his forehead is pinched and maybe crossed eyed then I would be worried. If you look at my sons forehead you can see that bump in the middle of his forehead.. HTH.. If you have any questions feel free to email me. I have done alot of research on cranio because that was my sons first diagonise before the catscan.
