I sent in the original study (can’t find it now),

but here is another that states the same thing.

From: http://www.clinmedres.org/cgi/content/full/3/2/87

it states:

The impact of transplanting patients with low MELD

scores was recently highlighted by Merion et al.11 These authors noted a higher

mortality during the first year post-transplant in recipients with

MELD scores <15 at the time of transplantation as compared to

candidates with MELD <15 that remained on the waiting list. Partly

in response to these new data, UNOS has now amended the

prioritization of deceased donor livers to give patients with higher

MELD scores a better chance at transplantation. šWhile status 1 patients remain at highest

priority, organs are subsequently offered locally within the

procuring OPO and then within the UNOS region to patients with MELD

scores 15. Listed patients with MELD scores <15 are only

eligible for deceased donor livers after these status 1 and MELD 15 candidates have been exhausted.
