Guest guest
My grandson is from St. , Minnesota...is now wearing the Gillette CranioCap and has been since mid November - he was 10-1/2 months old when he went into it...a little bit old...but, he has mild plagio and hopefully this will help round out his noggin. His ped. said - 'oh, it will take care of itself', but his father wanted to pursue the helmet just to be sure. Guess he is scheduled to wear it until at least mid Feb. We shall see at that time... Last week I called another place, Winkley Orthotics next to Minneapolis Childrens Hospital to see if the CranioCap does not do the job would they consider banding him with a Star or Doc Band...they told me that they do not band any child with assyemtry under 1.2 cm.or 10 mm - and that the Cranio Cap will do the same job as the Star Band...also said that a lot of times the mild cases do round themselves out, and as he ages it will continue to correct (I hope they are right). So, when this helmet comes off...guess he is done with treatment! Also told me to have them check him for Torticollis as that goes hand in hand with plagio most of the time. Said that most Dr.s are really uninformed about all this and they are seeing more and more of the plagio from the back to sleep campaign and also children in daycare. Day care providers by law have to have a worker one on one with each child if they are on their stomach, and so most of the time they just keep them in bouncy seats, etc. so they do not get the tummy time needed. Can also be caused by many other reasons...ie. position during gestation, in the birth canal, mother having a small pelvis, and of course the tight neck muscles. Well, this got long, but that is the info thay passed onto me..maybe some of this will help you. I have posted in the past, and gotten good info and several connections to moms in Mn. see post...back in November...from PhyllisInCincy if you want to check more of our story. Grandma Phyllis in Cincinnati...KM - Grandson in Minnesota...Mild Plagio - CranioCap November 2005 - age..will be 1 year end of Jan.

Guest guest
Phillis, I have been reading all you MN mom posts, lol, there are quite a few. How great it will be to have a support group for the area. I did however have a question about what I read in your talk with the people at Winkley if you don't mind. Do you know why they will not band a baby unless they are already at 10mm of asymmetry? Is this because of their belief that it will round out in most cases unless severe? Most of the band providers start banding at 5mm of asymmetry and 10mm is just 1mm away from moderate. Also just to give you some feedback on everything I have learned from my extensive research, most babies still having asymmetry over 6 months of age will not round out on thier own, they will recieve what we we get after banding the 1mm or sometimes 2mm, but not enough to correct it. So your grandson might be finished in Feb. That is awesome! I see you were talking about tort, do you think he is dealing with that as well? I hope not, but if he is there is a great support group for torticollis with lots of info. and help. It is Torticolliskids/ There is also the stretching document in the files here to show how to do the stretches. Local Early Intervention can help with tort. therapy also at low cost or no cost to parents if physical therapy is needed. Talk with you soon. Guest guest
I don't know why they told me they do not band unless the asymmetry is greater than 10mm - when I said that he had mild plagio and if the craniocap did not do the job would they consider a band for him that is what she told me. She said they measure the rt frontal to the left post lateral, then again the lt frontal to the rt post lateral..perhaps that gives a different measurement..I am not sure or even what these measurement mean. She just said it was imperative that he wear the helmel 23 of the 24 hours a day and to be consistent...and that when it got to feb and Gillette says ok - then he would be finished as far as they are concerned too. She said no reason to bring him in to see them. She also said that most mild cases do correct - but I wonder how good the correction is?? and that he will continue to correct as he ages. I am not much help. I have limited knowledge on this subject...just passing on what I was trying to learn. > > > > My grandson is from St. , Minnesota...is now wearing the > > Gillette CranioCap and has been since mid November - he was 10-1/2 > > months old when he went into it...a little bit old...but, he has > mild > > plagio and hopefully this will help round out his noggin. Guest guest
Have they not checked him for torticollis yet?? I would think they would have done that when they put him in the cranio cap?? As for rounding out post grad .. my daughter got 1 extra mm of correction in her ear and cranial vault asymmetries. She graduated at 8 1/2 months. We just remeasured ehr at 30 months. If you are not happy with the results or his parents aren't there are orthos who will band more mild cases (~6 mm+ versus the 10 mm). 10 mm is usually considered moderate and some of the milder cases warrant banding. Guest guest
Phyllis, Thank you so much for answering me. That is just so odd, I wonder why they feel that way? Maybe it's one of those, I'll support you if you support me sort of things between the clinics, lol. I run into that with doctors sometimes...makes me so mad. I know that Dominick has definitely had some post band rounding already(yippie), he has been out since Sept., and even though it looks a bit better in some areas it was not enough to change his final measurements yet, but I can hope. Your grandson is a bit younger than Dom, so maybe he will get even more post band. Does Gillette do measurements for the parents, so you can have beginning and ending numbers to help? You can look in the files here for the anthropometric measurements and it will help you understand the way they measure heads. I collect alot of the studies so if there is a particular study that you are looking for, feel free to ask if I have something on it, if I do I will share. Don't say you are not much help, it is by sharing all our info. and asking questions that we all learn. So what about the tort, was that a concern or just something they mentioned?
