Sorry to hear about that .

It could be worse, though. 35% kidney function can last for a long time.

There's no point being evaluated for a transplant at this point, because

with 35% kidney function, it could still be a long time before your husband

needs a transplant. Yes, controlling blood pressure with the right

medications certainly can slow down the progression of this kidney disease.

You can read on my website, www.igan.ca , how IgAN can affect the

transplanted kidney too. But, a great many people who get kidney transplants

because of other kidney diseases besides IgAN are in the same boat,

including the great majority who lost their original kidney function due to

diabetes. It's a chance one has to take, just like the chance of rejection.

Best of luck.

gone to the hospital monday blood pressure 179 over 104. the told him he has

about 35% function now, we are starting to feel scared now. I want to see

if I am a match but they said they dont do that until you are less than 20%.

Also he said he goes back to the VA in 2 weeks and he will be in a study

that is now in Japan where they lose 4% a year instead of the 16% that he

has been. If the blood pressure is under control does this help with

stablizing the kidney function? Also for donating a kidney to someone with

IGA will the IGA attack that kidney too? We have a nineyear old and 18

month old .

, I have a transplanted kidney and I have Igan. The disease has come back

to the new kidney within 6 months and I am stable and functioning at 40%. I

take fish oil and that has seemed to slow the progression. I agree, that kidney

can last a long time. I have been functioning on 40% now for 2 years. Good

luck, Lori

Hi ,

Welcome to you and your husband. First, please extend a heartfelt thank you

to your husband for his sacrificial service to our country. Second, I am so

sorry he has been diagnosed with IgAN. The good news is that 35% kidney

function can last a very very long time. I have had IgAN since my mid teens,

and

now in my mid 40s I am just now getting to the point where dialysis is looming

on the horizon. In the meantime, I have married, raised two children, worked

full time and lived a very full life. Controlling his blood pressure will be

key to protecting the kidney function he has though since high BP in itself is

a risk factor for kidney failure. I would be very interested to know what his

treatment course is for the study in Japan. Please keep us in the loop on

how they plan to treat him when he goes back in two weeks.

I hope you find much support and encouragement here.

Welcome again,
