PhotoDerm Treatment #6

Hello everyone,

I had PhotoDerm tx #6 (of 10) on Friday September 17,

after a break of nearly 4 months. All treatments are

being done by Dr. Avery in Wichita Falls, TX. Dr.

Avery was trained by Dr. Bitter. Procedures 6 through

10 will follow a similar pattern to the first 5

procedures in that shallow vessels are being targeted

first, followed by deeper vessels during subsequent

treatments. The difference this time is that the new

procedures are more aggressive than the first 5

treatments. Here are the vital stats: Filter was a

550; energy setting was 50 joules, triple pulse, with

a 10-second delay between blasts. The areas being

treated are the entire face, the front and back of the

neck, and the front and back of the ears (Ears are a

major flushing zone for me). This is a lot of

territory to cover. I received a total of 319 blasts;

with a triple pulse, I received nearly 1,000 pulses

total. The procedure took about 2 hours, and most of

the blasts were painful in despite the lidocain cream

which was applied to the treatment areas one hour in

advance, and was left on until the procedure.

Aftermath: Immediately after the tx, all treatment

areas were extremely red. There was one small line of

purpura on the lower neck, along with some localized

node-like swelling, again around the lower neck. My

opinion is that the lower-neck trauma was the result

of exposed beard hair on the lower neck (in a

horizontal line, same level as the adam's apple),

which I never can seem to remove completely when

shaving (I shaved my face and neck immediately before

the numbing procedure). Any facial hair produces much

heat when contacted by the IPL. The overall redness

and lower-neck swelling were nearly gone within 24

hours or so. I experienced some moderate generalized

facial swelling starting about 12 hours after the tx.

There was no associated pain, just some occasional

slight tingling. Right after tx, I plastered the

entire treatment area with tinted sunscreen (I make it

myself by mixing Loreal concealer with a white pasty

sunscreen, Biosun Faces, which I tolerate well. With

most of the trauma covered, I was able to go about my

business the following day (Saturday) with no

problems. It is now Sunday night, most of the facial

swelling and redness are gone, and I will go back to

work tomorrow.

My next tx (#7 of 10) is scheduled for Friday October

20 at 1 PM. I am scheduling treatments at 4-week

intervals for now, due to work constraints and

distance. I live in the Dallas area but am currently

working on a project in Houston (I’m a contract

programmer) . Houston is 400 miles from Wichita

Falls, then after the tx I have a 150-mile drive to my

house in Dallas.

Next time, I think I’ll fly : )

Jim

Hello all,

I waited for about 3 months after tx #5 and

re-evaluated. Although my condition is much improved,

I find that exercise still causes problems, as do my

allergies (when active). I had planned from the

beginning to get 8 treatments due to the initial

severity of my condition. This would have meant

purchasing 3 more after tx #5. I received a discount

on a package of 5 procedures. With this in mind, and

knowing the resilience of my enemy (veins " tough as

nails " ), I decided to have all 5 in order to ensure

optimization.

Cheers,

Jim

Hi Jim--

Good to hear form you again, and thanks for informing

us about your latest photderm. My I ask, what prompted

you to seek out an additional 5 treatments? Had your

symptoms recurred or did you just want to see how you

responded to the first set of treatments before going

further? Just curious, as I've stopped at 7 tx and am

debating whether or not to resume, just to further

reduce the residual (albeit minor) pinkness on the

cheeks.

Good luck to you!

Jim,

I've been following your experiences with photoderm since early

summer. I too have major face, neck, and ear flushing symptoms, so I

am really interested in your experiences with the photoderm treatment.

If you don't mind me asking, why are you going for a 10 treament

plan? I remember your original 5 seemed to work well when you posted

earliear in the summer?? Have you seen any return of symptoms or are

you trying for further reduction of symptoms?

Thanks for any info.
