I certainly meant no disrespect to those who practice total

abstinence. I've heard some people refer to their drinking as " extreme

moderation, " which seems contradictory until you think carefully about

the context. When you've been involved in a 12 step group, I think the

reasons you may choose to drink (or abstain), and the way you may

drink, can change. But if you choose to drink, you are not slipping or

destroying anything that, having been built over the course of years,

can be undone in a second.
