Guest guest
I'm 17 days post-partum and the doctor wants to see me at the 4 week mark; at that point, we'll be discussing birth control options. What does everyone else recommend and why? I haven't never in the past had too much luck with birth control pills and especially since they usually pack on about 10-15 pounds rather quickly (which is DEPLORE!) but I'm interested in that possibility again, I have just heard that the pills you can safely take while breastfeeding are different from the Tri-Cyclen I've always used in the past and similiar pills. We have to do some serious birth control though as I get pregnant super easy. Rene' in land
Guest guest
I would caution against the Depo-Provera shots immediately after childbirth. It is the same hormone as the mini-pill (progestin). Since some moms have problems with the mini-pill, the Depo could be devastating as you cannot simply stop taking it like you can a daily pill. The shot takes *at least* 3 months to wear off. I will tell moms that if they want a hormonal method, to try the mini-pill for a few months, if no problems, then they could try the Depo. Personally, I will never do Depo again. I had wild mood swings, my weight plateaued and then started to raise again, and my whole body was a mess. Acne, vaginal dryness, and really *dark* moods. Suicidal depression. I started a low estrogen pill at my 1 year check up, and switched to a slightly higher estrogen dose about 6 months later. I just think that I need a certain amount of estrogen to be normal. Well, that's not to say that I am normal now but... :-) Barrier methods (diaphragm, condoms) provide the least intrusive method for BF moms. IUDs are also a possibility. The Norplant again is a progestin only method and there is a progestin impregnated IUD that my doc would not use for me since I had such problems with progestin only. Jenn -----Original Message----- From: Wendi [sMTP:NatureBaby@...] Rene, I would really take care with birth control pills. They are notorious for lowering milk supply. I have heard mixed reviews about depo provera shot.
Guest guest
Jenn, Thanks for the great info. I didn't realize it was the same hormone as in the mini-pill. DUH! I don't use any hormonal birth control so I am certainly no expert! Guest guest
Shelby, I do have a friend who has one in and it hasn't seemed all that great. She said it was very painful going in and then she bled for a month straight (doc told her this was normal with new IUD) and then every period since getting it in has been really heavy and lot of cramps. She said she would have already gotten out if she didn't fear that procedure so much. Getting it in was bad for her and she is scared to get it taken out! This is the only experience I have with one but it changed my mind, as I was considering getting one too! Guest guest
Whoa, after reading you message (scary) I dug out information from my 1st midwife appt - including a pamphlet from planned parenthood on " Understanding IUD " . AAack! What your friend went through is completely " normal " - and will probably continue until she gets it out. It says many woman change their minds and want it out because of all the pain, cramping and bleeding. Nice. They don't even know WHY these things work. I can't believe my midwife recommended this. S. Guest guest
I have an IUD. It was really a last resort for me. I got pregnant twice on the pill, once with a diaphragm(yes we used it every time) and once with LAM with diaphragm use. I was real leary about having one but I must say I love it. I had a little cramping when they inserted it but since then I really dont have any more cramping than I usually do. I do have one day out of my period where it is a little heavier but my period is now shorter Hope this helps. If you have any specific questions about the insertion or anything feel free to email me off the list Krisitna Shelby wrote: > I'm seriously considering an getting an IUD after a while (using LAM for maybe > 9-12 mos this time) since it will be a couple of years before we have another > child - if ever. Guest guest
I think we have tried just about everything. After the two pill babies my dr reccomended the norplant(she thought that I just did not absorb the hormones through the digestive tract). Well that was horrible, weight gain and mood swings and it wrecked havoc on my milk supply. I think it has the same hormone in it that the depo shot has. And after the other two babies we wanted something that was more reliable but reversible. A lot of women I work with have IUD's and love them but I would do more research on it before commiting to it. It is expensive and has to be removed by the doctor. Good luck in what you decide a Shelby wrote: > Thanks for the info - I'm glad it's working out for you. > I got a diaphragm after my last child but never used it.
Guest guest
I LOVE my IUD. I am on an IUD mail list and at least 80% of women are happy with the IUD. All of the women that I know personally with an IUD (about 8 ladies) love it also. For more info see my other post titled: the IUD Alana At 12:56 PM 6/26/00 -0700, you wrote: >Shelby, >I do have a friend who has one in and it hasn't seemed all that great. Guest guest
I'm still leery about an IUD...... What else would y'all recommend? I want to keep my supply as steady as possible, since Damia seems to be happy with it.
