I'm 17 days post-partum and the doctor wants to see me at the 4 week

mark; at that point, we'll be discussing birth control options.

What does everyone else recommend and why? I haven't never in the past

had too much luck with birth control pills and especially since they

usually pack on about 10-15 pounds rather quickly (which is DEPLORE!)

but I'm interested in that possibility again, I have just heard that the

pills you can safely take while breastfeeding are different from the

Tri-Cyclen I've always used in the past and similiar pills. We have

to do some serious birth control though as I get pregnant super easy.

I am 3 months post partum and some of my online friends have started on the mini pill, 3 out of 4 of them had their milk supply significantly affected. One didn't notice much at all but she had an oversupply to begin with. Of the other three, two were supplementing anyway, one of them just started giving more bottles but is still bfing, she only plans on nursing till 6 months anyway, the other one didn't want to give up the pill so she started giving more bottles, that baby is now entirely bottlefed. That last mom was determined to bf until the baby self weans so she stopped taking the pill and her supply is coming back.

I have heard from many women whose milk supply was affected this way and it wasn't something I was willing to risk. If you really want bfing to succeed you should avoid any hormonal BC options IMHO. We are using condoms (until dh gets snipped).

Rene,

I would really take care with birth control pills. They are notorious for

lowering milk supply. I have heard mixed reviews about depo provera shot.

I personally will be using LAM (Lactational Ammenorrhea Method) after I have

another baby and use FAM (Fertility Awareness Method) the rest of the time.

I'm seriously considering an getting an IUD after a while (using LAM for maybe

9-12 mos this time) since it will be a couple of years before we have another

child - if ever. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I would caution against the Depo-Provera shots immediately after

childbirth. It is the same hormone as the mini-pill (progestin). Since

some moms have problems with the mini-pill, the Depo could be

devastating as you cannot simply stop taking it like you can a daily

pill. The shot takes *at least* 3 months to wear off. I will tell

moms that if they want a hormonal method, to try the mini-pill for a

few months, if no problems, then they could try the Depo.

Personally, I will never do Depo again. I had wild mood swings, my

weight plateaued and then started to raise again, and my whole body

was a mess. Acne, vaginal dryness, and really *dark* moods. Suicidal

depression. I started a low estrogen pill at my 1 year check up, and

switched to a slightly higher estrogen dose about 6 months later. I

just think that I need a certain amount of estrogen to be normal.

Well, that's not to say that I am normal now but... :-)

Barrier methods (diaphragm, condoms) provide the least intrusive

method for BF moms. IUDs are also a possibility. The Norplant again

is a progestin only method and there is a progestin impregnated IUD

that my doc would not use for me since I had such problems with

progestin only.

Jenn,

Thanks for the great info. I didn't realize it was the same hormone as in

the mini-pill. DUH! I don't use any hormonal birth control so I am

certainly no expert! LOL

I haven't had any personal experience with them, but I've heard they can cause permanent infertility as well. Tubal blockage of some sort I understand...... My midwife firmly told me NOT to get one EVER! So I'm going for Depo-Provera, since my Dr this time recommended that.

Re: Birth Control Pill QuestionWhoa, after reading you message (scary) I dug out information from my 1stmidwife appt - including a pamphlet from planned parenthood on "UnderstandingIUD". AAack! What your friend went through is completely "normal" - and will probablycontinue until she gets it out. It says many woman change their minds and wantit out because of all the pain, cramping and bleeding. Nice. They don't evenknow WHY these things work. I can't believe my midwife recommended this.S.

I have an IUD. It was really a last resort for me. I got pregnant twice on the

pill, once with a diaphragm(yes we used it every time) and once with LAM with

diaphragm use. I was real leary about having one but I must say I love it. I

had

a little cramping when they inserted it but since then I really dont have any

more

cramping than I usually do. I do have one day out of my period where it is a

little heavier but my period is now shorter

Hope this helps. If you have any specific questions about the insertion or

anything feel free to email me off the list

Thanks for the info - I'm glad it's working out for you.

I got a diaphragm after my last child but never used it. We had used NFP for 7

or 8

years then got lax about it because we decided to get married (and have kids

right

away) - I was 3 mos pg at our wedding. This baby was semi-palnned, but I just

didn't

think it would happen so quickly. Anyway, after this one I was hoping for a more

dependable method. Guess there's drawbacks to everything.

S.

Thanks again for the info.

Be very careful with the Depo, if it affects your milk supply there is no going back. It stays in your system for months. At least with the pill, you can stop taking it.

Michele

I haven't had any personal experience with them, but I've heard they can cause permanent infertility as well. Tubal blockage of some sort I understand...... My midwife firmly told me NOT to get one EVER! So I'm going for Depo-Provera, since my Dr this time recommended that.

Maybe I could get fitted for a diaphragm..... My mom used one and it worked for her after she had me...... How long before you want to have sex can you put them in? I don't like condoms cause they kill spontaneity and I don't want something like that if I can help it......

Not only is NFP great birth control it is an excellent way to become very
