Guest guest
We have tomatoes, jalape ---------- ño peppers, banana peppers, onions, lettuce, yellow squash, cucumbers, green beans, okra, watermelon, and carrots. This is the 3rd garden we have grown together and each year it gets better. We are not farmers by any stretch of the imagination but it is kind of fun raising your own veggies! This is the first year that we will be canning and freezing as we actually weeded and fertilized! LOL! I am looking forward to all the great veggies, pickles, soups, spaghetti sauce, and fruit (maybe some freezer jam and fresh-frozen peaches) that we will have for this winter. Oh, yeah, planted some sunflowers as well. So we will have the blooms to decorate our house in a few weeks! Thanks for asking! PS Did you make it to the Peach Festival over the weekend? Sounds like tons of fun! |--------+-----------------------> | | " RW " | | | <r.rweston@ve| | | rizon.net> | | | | | | 07/15/2002 | | | 09:30 AM | | | Please | | | respond to | | | wwliterside | | | | |--------+-----------------------> >-----------------------------------------------------------| | | | To: wwliterside | | cc: (bcc: -C /BRE/AGFA/US/BAYER) | | Subject: Re: 's 7/14/02 | | journal | >-----------------------------------------------------------| ---------- Journal looks great !! Guest guest
OMG!! You have a big garden! We have had one in the past with tomatoes, bell peppers, onions, carrots, asparagus cucumbers, green beans, and peas. We also have blackberry plants (but they haven't really done much yet), green grapes (but they died), plum and apple trees. I grew up with a garden every year and I really missed not having one this year. Maybe next year I will have one again. No, we didn't get to the peach festival. I was a little disappointed but after we went to the mall Saturday morning (for the Sears special Grand Opening stuff--we got 5 $10 gift cards, one for each of us), Robin wanted to come home and work on the house. He and the boys are taking out all the windows and putting Tyvek (outside wall sealer paper) and starting to put bricks on. YEAH!!! Guest guest
Hi Riza!! There is NO such thing as a dumb question. I have always started with new plants every time, except my asparagus--it just keeps going as you cut it. I have tried strawberry plants a few times with not much luck. My blackberry bushes are just too young to put out much, the grapes just dried out and I need to plant some more. My trees are growing like crazy and put out a little fruit, but not enough yet for the kids. I am hoping that they will start doing more eventually. Guest guest
Thanks Maureen, The weather here makes it easy to grow stuff and I just have to remember to water! Especially with the last week being so hot---a few of my flowering plants got scorched (my fuschias are dead! waaa!) WE love asparagus...maybe I'll try that next year at our new house. My mom's always loved having fruit trees around. At our old house where I grew up, she had cherry, peach, apple, and lemon trees. Plus a trellised grape vine that gave us great shade in the summer. Her plum tree right now is actually called a " fruit cocktail " tree because it has Plum, apricot, and peach grafted onto one tree so different branches have different fruit! isn't that cool?! -riza > > OMG!! Guest guest
I grew up with one as well. was my inspiration for planting last year and all 3 of us enjoyed the fresh veggies. This year, we went a little bit bigger and Kevan has been more involved with this one. Of course, any excuse for to play in the dirt is fine with her! You know, would probably enjoy gardening. Sounds like your house is really coming along. It will be great when it is done! > OMG!! You have a big garden! Guest guest
Wow! What are you going to do with all those peppers? Please pass along any good recipes you have stashed away! I see Maureen answered your question, but I have a tip. Unless you are using planter boxes, just cut the dead plants back into the soil at the end of summer and it will add nutrients back into the soil. This will give you a good start for next year. Guest guest
LOVES gardening!!! She has some flowers that she planted in a one of those really big flower pots, the ones that you have in your yard or at your door. She even has her own little tools for it. The way our summer has been so rainy, I might try doing a fall garden and see how that does. Guest guest
Oh yeah, I forgot about that. We have a tiller and Robin (because I can't handle it, the tiller has a mind of its own) tills it all back up when it is over. Guest guest
I don't know yet what I'm gonna do with all my peppers---we love hot stuff but I think we went overboard!!! I put a serrano pepper into my taco soup over the weekend and it wasn't too spicy--but the habaneros are sure to be HOT! Thanks for the tip...BTW, this garden is the one in mom's house where we are living right now...we don't move into our new place until Aug. 3rd. and we will have to do some container gardening there...There is a retaining wall by the backyard fence at the new place though and i can already envision tomatoes and other veggies there for next summer. -riza > > > Wow! Guest guest
AWWWWW (whine) Please share the rain. We've only had 1-1/2 inches all summer. Pasture land is sparse and I don't know what we will do for feed for winter. Weezie ----- Original Message ----- The way our summer has been so rainy, I might try doing a fall garden and see how that does. Guest guest
Hi Weezie, I would share if I could! We could use a little drying out. We have been getting rain every day or two all spring and summer. In fact, one area just west of Fort Worth got 6 inches today. Maureen Re: 's 7/14/02 journal AWWWWW (whine) Please share the rain.
