The real trick is to increase protein and absolutely cut out ALL sugar and carbs. The sugar and carbs will make you gnaw on your arm the way a dog chews on rawhide. If you drink something that is all sugar you may feel satisfied for an hour or so but then the hunger will kick in full force due to insulin spikes and blood sugar issues. So the key is to stop all sugar/carbs and stick to protein drinks and you really won't be all that hungry. You'll have more head hunger issues than you will stomach hunger. And we all deal with head hunger regardless.

It isn't easy and anyone that tells you it is easy is a liar. ;o) But it is doable. It's a few weeks out of your entire lifetime and the post op diet is sooooo critical for your band to work long term. There is little room for cheating.

The first couple of days after surgery when you are still healing it is easy to stay on the clear liquid diet. Once you feel better, it becomes horrible. I had the surgery on the 24th of May and after about 7 days was going crazy. Once I started on the protein drinks it was better for a few days but, then you are sick to death of just drinking liquids. Immediately after the surgery, I would feel stuffed in the top half of my stomach and starvingin the bottom half. The first month is hard. But, I lost about 13 lbs in the first week and just that little amount of weight has made me feel a lot better all over. It will be hard but, its worth it.Colleen

I am scheduled for July 7! I know that whatever the discomfort that goes along with this surgery- it will be more than worth it. But, can anyone tell me how difficult it is to stay on the post-op liquid diet? Will I immediately feel full with the small amount of liquid that is mandatory right after surgery? Did you crave solid food or did the liquid diet satisfy you?THANK YOU!!Sue

Thank you all so much for your suggestions! I really appreciate the

benefit of your experiences. I'll start the hi-protein diet now so I

can experiment with what I like and try to find ways to cope with the

head hunger.

THANKS AGAIN!\Sue

All I know is that as I started the liquid diet, a whole Chinese restaurant menu flashed before my eyes. You really have to stick to your instructions and take your vitamins and liquids. I drank a lot of home made chicken broth. I didn't feel full, actually I didn't feel like eating at all. I also drank lots of water between meals and had sugar-free popsicles as my treat. Stick with it! Vince
