Certain people cannot take the cholesterol lowering drugs because they have

some pretty severe side effects--like the fact that it affects the muscles.

I believe that I have read that it affects the liver in those people who

cannot take it and I think this is a pretty common side affect.

Yes, muscle atrophy, pains and cramps are definite side effects of Lipitor

and most other statins used for cholesterol management. These effects are

not universal to all patients, but I have known at lease 4 people on Lipitor

and similar statins to have the experience. I was on Lipitor and had

horrible cramps and pains every time I came back from any activity that rose

above normal walking. Mr Dr has no put me on a combination Zetia (not a

statin) and Crestor (a brand new statin) and am not experiencing the cramps.

The only draw back to Zetia and Crestor is that these are non-formulary

drugs, because they are so new, so even with insurance they aren't cheap.

Ask you Dr. if these drugs may be a better fit to control your cholesterol

without the pains.

I have been taking Lipitor for years, I think since it first came out, and I

am on the max of 80 mg/day. I am also on zetia 10 mg per day. And yes, I do

have muscle cramping, especially at nigh. For some newer non formulary drugs

that are not covered, some drug companies have programs for people without

insurance or limited coverage. I applied to Merck, who makes zetia and was

approved for their program. I get a 6 month supply free. Check out the

following link for more information. If you qualify, it could save

hundreds/thouosands of dollars in prescription meds.
