Hi everyone. I still haven't made my first batch of soap yet... still

researching, lol. There is just one thing that I cannot seem to find

anywhere! I feel silly for asking this but where in the world can I buy

lye???? We don't have credit cards so I don't shop online, do regular stores

sell it? I've looked everywhere and asked around, but no luck. Can someone

point this newbie in the right direction??

Where do you get lye for just over a dollar? Someone else the other day said

the same thing.............and I pay $3.89 for 12 oz of Red Devil Lye at my

local food stores. Any other ideas?? Thanks.......Judy

I've found that the best price for Red Devil lye is at Meijer, about

$2-$2.50/can. It isn't often sold near known drug manufacturing areas,

though, since it's used in making and/or cutting illegal drugs. I found it

in the deep suburbs. It's always good to ask a manager if they can order it

for you, if you know they can get it, like Meijer. Regardless of the size

of the store or your order, they should want your business. They know you

are going to buy it from someone, why not them?

Please understand Dena that we're here to help, we were all in your shoes in

some form or another. In fact, I also had a hard time finding lye. I did

find it first at a " mom & pop " type hardware store, where I could order a

case for 20% regular price. Not bad, I thought, until I saw the Meijer's

price, which I again thought was a great bargain! Which of course isn't

when you can buy bulk 50# bags for really cheap per # price. I'm not to

that stage in my business, yet. But it's nice to have the knowledge

everyone shares on this list.

Hi Dena!

Check out your grocery store. Go to the section where they have cleaners

and look for Red Devil lye. It's a white can with blue and red printing on

it. It's about 12 oz. and costs just over $1.00 (I think). Do not

substitute Drano or anything like that because it has metals in there.

HTH!

It's been over a year since I've purchased it in the store. Normally I buy

50# bags of the stuff. But, I don't think I was too far off on the price.

It was $1-2 ...

$3.89?? Eewww!!!

Hi Judy,

I am not sure if you have any around there, but I purchase my lye

directly from a chemical place. The last 50lb bag I purchased was fairly

cheap considering what Red Devil gets for their lye. So check your local

yellow pages for chemical supply places. HTH?

Janet,

I just had Larrae e-mail me about the same thing, so I will post

for all to see. She inquired as to any special storing instructions for

bulk lye. I checked my MSDS sheets for the storing and handling of caustic

soda, and this is all I found.

1) Do Not Use Glass Containers

2) Keep Container Closed When Not In Use.

3) Store In A Cool Dry Place.

4) Keep Out Of The Reach Of Children.

I can only speak for myself here, but I purchased the bag a few

months ago, and I keep the majority of it a 5 gallon plastic bucket in the

downstairs closet. I also keep a plastic 3 gallon ice cream bucket of it

near my supplies for soaping. I have found it to be as fresh and loose, no

clumps, as the day I bought it. But if anyone is interested in knowing if

there is a proper procedure in the storage of caustic soda, I would be then

happy to call my supplier for any info.
