Guest guest
Hi Katy, The original pharmacy (which I no longer use for ANYTHING) was charging me over $12.00 for 45 PTU, a months supply for me...I called around to different pharmacies, asked how much my PTU and different doses of Armour were without insurance...all were much much lower. I called my pharmacy on it, they said, " well we only charge you what your insurance company *allows* us to charge you " I told them they were charging me almost double (on my Armour 15 mg. it was more than double!) what it sells for in other pharmacies...they told me to take it up with insurance company...I did, I raised the devil let me tell you, then I turned it all into our state Attorney Generals office. Near as we can figure, this drug store owes us about $300.00 for this practice of overcharging because the 'insurance company' lets them, for all the years I have been on replacement hormones. When I was on Synthroid, they were charging me my $20.00 co-pay when the script I was on sold for 11 dollars and change and they got away with it. If I were to send in my scripts for Armour 15 mg. (drug store cost without insurance is $5.95) Armour 30 mg. (cost $7.80) Armour 90 mg (cost $8.95) and my PTU (cost $8.59) ... that is monthly cost that I currently pay...my insurance carrier by mail order would charge me $30.00 on each script (our co-pay doubled from $15.00) for a 3 month supply, well in excess of what I pay by going to a pharmacy who does not know I carry insurance...so check around. My doctor was wonderful in writing new scripts that I could take to this new pharmacy, and she is the one that urged me to contact my attorney generals office. In the states, Armour Thyroid and PTU are Cheap without insurance so you may want to do some calling around and get prices of what yours will cost per month without insurance. It is no wonder insurance and prescription costs are out of this world! Guest guest
Normally if you have a co-pay and the cost of the drug is less than the co-pay, you pay the lesser amount. If that's not happening with your insurance, you might want to investigate. I don't think it's legal to charge more than what the drug costs without insurance. I've never had a problem with this, myself. Holly

Guest guest
Hi Holly, It is not legal for them to charge more, but they do it. And with our prescription plan through the shop with mailed in prescriptions to merck-medco, they can get away with it, how I don't know. Others are now complaining about this also. Guest guest
Well that stinks. When I was on PTU, my co-pay is $10.00, but I only had to pay $3 and something for my PTU (60, 50mg. Tablets). I have to pay the full co-pay for my methimazole, which means it costs at least that much. I have Humana insurance, and get my prescriptions filled at Kroger. They've never cheated me that I can tell. So, really, if you're getting charged more than that for PTU, I think a call to the insurance company is in order! Guest guest
Thanks Holly for the explanation of euthyroid. Now I have another question... Is PTU normally sold as a 50 mg tablet ? I am not sure what mine is... it probably is 50 mg. So I am taking 3 tabs. per day which makes 90 aprox a month. I am paying a co-pay of $15 for each refill. Does this mean that I am likely paying alot more by paying the co-pay, and neither the pharmacy or the insurance company have told me? Getting annoyed... Katy. :0( > Well that stinks. Guest guest
It's hard to say. Someone else said they're paying $8 something for 45. I just know I was really surprised when I got my prescription filled the first time and it was so cheap! I would think that they also come in 100-mg. pills, but I don't know that for sure. Guest guest
Hi Holly, Call other pharmacies and get their costs for your PTU telling them that you have no insurance and see what the costs are at them. I was not aware of this practice until the pharmacy I use to use charged me the same amount of money for my Armour 15 mg. and my Armour 90 mg. When I questioned this, they told me, to my face it is what my insurance company *allows* them to charge, I argured this point with them, said it isn't fair, so the next month they RAISED the cost of my Armour 90 mg. to $11.99. Anyhow, all of this is what precipitated my calling around to other pharmacies and telling them I had no insurance, the costs at ALL other pharmacies was much cheaper...where I fill them now, with no insurance for PTU and Armour the costs were HALF, in some cases, the cost using my insurance plan. I did call my insurance company, argued with them, their excuse...we have a standard cost sheet that we let drug companies know the maximum cost they are allowed to charge the customers. I had enough, I sent a letter along with receipts, costs, names of drugs and pharmacy and insurance company involved to the NY State Attorney General's office. It is in their hand, but we all know how slow government can move. I hope they slap the insurance company and the pharmacy on both cheeks and stop this crap...but it does go on. When I made my sisters in aware of this practice, they both did their own calling around, and found the same tactics being done in both Indiana and Texas. Guest guest
Hi Katy, I pay $8.59 for 45 tablets of the 50 mg. PTU a month, yours is double mine so that would come out to about $17.00 so you are saving. When your dose goes down, you may want to call around to other pharmacies for costs without insurance if your insurance do-pay remains at $15.00 for 45 tables, or whatever your lowered dosage is. Guest guest
Hi Jody, I have just requested a price quote online from CSV and they came back with $13.09 for 90x 50 mg Tablets, so it is a little cheaper. Now I have discovered this I am going to research the other pharmacies. I can't believe that the pharmacies or the insurance companies aren't obliged to inform you if the actual cost of the drug is less than your co-pay. Now I am new to the prescription insurance scam as I am not a USA citizen... If you have more than one type of medication and you go and get them filled at the same time do you have to pay two sets of co-pay ? Katy. > Hi Katy, > I pay $8.59 for 45 tablets of the 50 mg.
